Parked at the washout at the top of the hill right above the windmill.
45 degrees. Forgot my hiking jacket but remembered to bring lunch and 3 quarts of water. Made it back with a pint.
8:55 – Left the truck – 50 yards later had to negotiate a 4’ barbed wire fence.
9:08 – first set of cliffs
9: 17 – up through a break in the cliffs. Followed along the edge of the cliff for about half a mile. Level and not much brush. Found one backpack from years ago.
10:01 - When I was a cross from the caves on the East side of the Canyon I headed up the opposite way to the West ridge. Reached the ridge 10:01. Have hiked the ridge before.
10:09 – Looking to the East from the end of the ridge I can see where people come and target practice. I decided to drop over the far side away from anyone wanting to sight in a rifle. Thought about going back because… I was tired. This way was incredibly steep.
10:20 – decided to take my first break. Saw a few crystal clusters. Very small. Lots of hoodoos here and I’ve been down to the right of them. Sat and weighed in the options for the return trip. Decided to try a different way than last time. Last trip took me down a .75 mile long wash that had a series of Waterfalls and cliffs to negotiate.
10:39 – Started down toward some cliffs I checked out about a year ago. I thought I saw a cave beneath them then.
10:41 spotted what I hoped was a window. On the way to it I came a cross a small hollow/cave.
10:48 – Reached the Window- about 6’ wide and 10’ feet tall. Tear drop shaped. Can see Elephant head through the window.
11:00 left window and headed to where I thought there was another cave. Looking back toward the window I spotted several other caves. Plan to check these out another weekend.
11:11 made it to cave from a year ago. 25-30 feet deep. 5-6 feet high at opening.
11:41 Hiked around the ridge at about the same elevation and for no particular reason, headed up a small wash and nearly tripped over a black pipe. Followed it up the wash and found a cistern.
Decided to follow the pipe down the wash and see where it went. Apparently there was a fire and sections of it were burned away. Eventually came to a metal stock tank about 20 feet about the creekbed.
12:54 back at the truck. Almost exactly 4 hours round trip.
3.12 miles total distance
950 feet elevation aeg.
4 hours total
1 hour 12 minutes of rest
Was worried about water for a while because I halfway froze mine as usual and it didn’t have a chance to melt as fast as I would have liked. |
