| no partners | | I decided to do a morning summit of Mormon Mtn ahead of any monsoon storm development. It was raining at dawn with cloudy skies in the first few hours of the day which helped delay the onset of more serious convection. A little humid on the climb. Nice views over the lake, though it has lost quite a bit of its water since a few months ago.
The top of this mountain is a real treat. I headed over to Tower Tank before hitting the high point. From there I decided to attempt a descent off the north slope, which by all map observations would be very steep. After a very enjoyable and picturesque stroll through the summit aspen groves, I happened upon an unexpected utility road.
Not sure when this was put in, but it was certainly not done by a wheeled vehicle. Only tracks could traverse a slope so steep. I found myself unable to stay on the track and had to make my own switchbacks to manage the grade. To be clear: I don't recommend this descent to anybody who thinks it's a quick-easy way down. It may be shorter, but it's so steep and loose it might take twice as long to descend it!
Once at the bottom on the AZT, it's a pleasant hike back to the trailhead. Water was flowing in the drainage below Mayflower Spring, so I hiked up to see the source. It started pouring less than 5 minutes after getting back to my truck, so timing worked out great. |
