| no partners | | I remember thinking there could be some nice fall colors along this trail when I hiked it in the summer and after perusing through some past triplogs, I knew my timing was probably good, so I gave it a shot this morning with Dot.
I did not necessarily get blown away by the fall colors, (Buck Springs is a tough act to follow) but I still really enjoyed the nice cool morning hike with Dot. The colors almost seemed past their prime. There is some green still hanging on, but by the time they change the rest of the leaves may be on the ground. I swear some of those oaks go from green to brown. I initially planned to take a break and turn around at Mescal Spring, but the final few tenths of a mile did not seem promising for running across a mountain oasis. I actually ended up checking past reports about 500 feet from the spring and decided I was probably not going to miss much. We turned around at there and headed back to the intersection in the shaded gulch for a little break. A little climbing to get back to the TH, but nothing too bad. I am sure there are better colors some where on that mountain, but we did not leave disappointed. In fact, the dull, rustier oaks kind of reminded me of back home in northern Michigan, so there was a little nostalgia to the hike. |
