| no partners | | In early October I took a hike on North Canyon Trail #4 from the west end. The trailhead is about a mile and a half south of the East Rim Viewpoint and Arizona Trail Trailhead. This end of the trail, though a little hard to find in the dark, is easily accessed with a normal car from AZ-67 and Forest Road 611. To do this hike, I left my wife at the North Rim where we were staying for a couple of days.
After a mile or so of level walking, the trail crosses the AZT, passes through a wilderness gate, and then drops into the canyon. The descent into the canyon was pretty in the early morning light, with the sun illuminating the golden aspens everywhere. While up on the plateau they were missing their leaves, in the canyon they were still gorgeous.
Descending the switchbacks, I found North Canyon Spring running, and followed along, and usually well above, the stream. After Upper North Canyon Spring, the stream was flowing even more vigorously, which continued down past a nice campsite. Eventually, the stream dried up however, and at 5 miles in, I turned around and returned to the top of the canyon. |
