| no partners | | I hiked three wilderness areas in three days, staying in the White Mountain Lodge in Greer each night. The first day was a jaunt up the Escudilla Lookout Trail. I really noticed the altitude on day one. I was an hour quicker coming down than going up! As I approached the trailhead, it looked like it might be pretty disappointing with the scarring from the 2011 Wallow Fire, but once I got out there, it was less depressing. The aspens are recovering fast, and while it was well past fall color season, I can see that this area would be spectacular in early October.
Lower on the hills, aspens dominate, with a fir here and there. Higher up, spruces take over, and then mostly burn scar and golden grass.
Disappointingly, climbing the tower is not allowed.
The road to the trailhead is good for an ordinary car, and the trail is in great shape up to the tower. |

Autumn Foliage Observation None Way past peak. Would be amazing in early October. |
