But after a lazy morning at camp we decided that this would fit the bill and also help finish the North Canyon Trail since we had hiked the upper portion of it as part of our East North South loop a few days earlier.
This one starts in pinyon juniper type desert along the water-free North Canyon drainage. It slowly climbs through oak and maple before reaching pine country. This time of year was absolutely perfect, with cool air in the more sunny lower sections, and an explosion of fall colors along the entirety of the wooded upper half of the hike. I took the time to count on the return trip...the trail crosses the creek an ankle-busting 41 times in the 5 miles below the east rim junction!
We turned around at the east rim junction where we had descended a few days earlier. Besides the obvious art site, I wouldn't be surprised if a more diligent exploration here turned up more art or dwellings in the cliffs of this canyon. |
