There are several "Black Hills" in Arizona, with this one being an expansive range in Graham and Greenlee Counties. Peak 5966 is in Graham County, while the Black Hills highpoint, Guthrie Peak, is in Greenlee County.
I drove in on some forest roads off of Highway 70, south of Safford. I was going to drive to Shoat Tank and start hiking from there, but it would have been a very short hike from there, so I stopped and parked alongside the road before getting to Shoat Tank so I could stretch my legs a little more.
I walked on the road NW for about a mile, and then took a wash off to the east before getting to Shoat Tank. After leaving the wash I went cross-country across some gentle hills and ridges before making a steep climb to the peak from a ridge and slopes from the ENE of the peak. There was a cliff band surrounding the peak, but I was able to find a weakness in the band that required a short, easy class 3 move to get above the band. This actually put me on a false summit, and I had to walk another 500 feet or so to get to 5966.
Views at the summit were nice so I hung out there a bit. I signed the summit register log; the prior entry was almost 2 years to day before my visit.
I returned more or less the same way that I came.
Synopsis
The Black Hills are an open and scenic area, so I enjoyed this hike. The hike was not too hard, although there is a short scramble to get above a cliff band surrounding the peak. |
