I parked along Middlemarch Road next to a wash. I went in the wash a short distance and took a forest road for about 3 miles. The road eventually petered out in a drainage. I had intended to follow the drainage up to a saddle but it got too choked with vegetation to follow, so I went up a very steep slope up to a ridgeline. The slope had lots of trees and was very brushy; I probably climbed up 750 feet in about 1/2 mile.
Once on the ridgeline the grade lessened quite a bit, but the ridgeline was rocky and brushy. I had to do a bit of scrambling but I made it to the summit, which had some nice 360 degree views.
On the way back I went back along the ridgeline to the slope that I came up, and instead of descending north down the slope that I came up I got the not-so-bright idea to follow a ridgeline that headed west. It was fairly open, but it was brushy and rocky, and required a bit of scrambling to navigate. After getting past this ridgeline I had several options, none of which looked all that great. I wound up descending to the southwest, which was steep, rocky, and had some vegetation that required constant attention to navigate around. At one point I got into some of the densest ocotillo that I have encountered. I could have taken some ridgelines or slopes that would have provided a more direct route back to the road that I came in on. They were steep, but I think taking one of them would have been better than what I did.
I eventually made it back to the road and followed it back to the trailhead.
If I did this hike again I would come back more-or-less the same way that I ascended.
Synopsis
Ocotillo is no longer my favorite desert plant. |
