| partners | | It had been a while since anyone from HAZ had shown some love to the Sevenmile Mountains, so Tracie the Intrepid and I decided to head out there today.
I turned off of Highway 60 onto FR5326 and took it for a ways, and then went on a lesser road for a bit and parked. I was hoping to drive a bit further, but it was a nice day and I didn't mind doing a little extra road walking. The hike turned out to be about 60% road walking and 40% bushwhacking. That is in distance. In time, it was more like 10% road walking and 90% bushwhacking!
Actually the bushwhacking wasn't all that bad, and the off-trail hiking was a lot better than some other hikes that I have done lately.
Once we left the road, the off-trail ascent was pretty brushy, but there were always gaps and ways to avoid just plowing through the brush. I had dressed defensively, which helped quite a bit. The worst of the brush was yucca with sharp pointed tips that kept showing up at the most inopportune times. In some places I took some hand clippers and trimmed off the sharp tips before going through.
We took our time and made it up to the Seven Benchmark. We located the benchmark and both reference marks. From @FLYING_FLIVER 's triplog, I knew where the azimuth mark was but decided not to go over to it.
We did, however, go over to the highpoint of the range which was about 1/4 mile past the benchmark. There was a Lilley-MacLeod logbook at the Seven Benchmark, and another log book at the highpoint.
We returned basically the same way that we came up. The descent was much easier, as we were able to take advantage of being at an elevated position and look down to see lanes and gaps in the brush well ahead of us.
Guayo's El Rey in Miami is closed on Wednesdays, so after the hike we stopped off at Guayo's on the Trail just outside of Globe.
This was a pretty nice hike in a scenic area, so I am glad that I went out and did this one! |
