As the name implies there is more than one College Peak; in fact, there are two -- one to the north and one to the south. The southernmost peak is the highest, being 106 feet higher than the northern peak.
The College Peaks are in the southeastern corner of Arizona, northeast of the town of Douglas. The College Peaks are in the Perilla Mountains, and are the highpoint of the range. The Perillas run north-to-south and are a small range, only being about 11 miles long. Most of the range is in Arizona, but it crosses into Mexico for about one mile.
The "standard" route for the hike is from the north, off of North College Peak Rd. That route looked pretty steep on the ascent past North College Peak, so I decided to park in a pullout on Highway 80 and come in from the northwest.
I had to walk across the desert floor for a ways, and then ascend to ridgeline that runs between the 2 college peaks. What I did not see on the topo map was all of the brush that I would encounter on this ascent. The brush really slowed down my ascent and descent to and from this ridgeline. In retrospect, I would have been better off coming in from the north. While the route from the north has a steep section, it is shorter, has less elevation gain, and less brush.
Once on the ridgeline I dodged some brush and rocks and made my way underneath a false summit. Some scrambling was needed to get up to the false summit. It looked intimidating at first, but after poking around I was able to keep the scramble to low class 3. At one point, to avoid a sketchy climb, I had to take my backpack off to go through some tree branches. I thought that this scramble was the highlight of the hike.
Once on the false summit I had to hike another 1,000 or so to get to the summit. Views were great at the top so I enjoyed being up there.
I returned the way that I came. |
