This was a Good News/Bad News hike. The good news is that there is a road going from the trailhead all the way to the summit of Armer Mountain. The bad news is that there has been no maintenance on the road since 1905, and after 118 years of neglect the road is not in the best of shape!

The road was actually in good shape for about 1/4 mile; after that things took a turn for the worse.

Actually the first 1.5 miles wasn't that bad on the way up -- we basically went up in a drainage that topped out at a saddle not far from the memorial for a 1951 place crash. We checked out the memorial plaque, and tried to find some photographs and other documentation for the place crash that was there when @FLYING_FLIVER was there almost 6 years ago. Sadly, the documentation is no longer there.

After leaving the memorial, we continued up the mountain and encountered lots of manzanita. The road essentially ceased to exist in this section, but we were able to find gaps through most of the manzanita. Once past the worst of the manzanita, we picked up the roadbed again for a ways. We got into some pine trees as we got closer to the summit and things opened up a bit.

There are lots of trees near the highpoint, which obscured the views. However, we walked a bit to the west and had some nice views to the west of Four Peaks and Roosevelt Lake. I looked for the benchmark but did not find it -- it was likely covered up by pine needles. There were 2 summit register log containers that were in plastic bottles. Both bottles had been punctured, perhaps by a hungry bear. Fortunately I brought a container and put the contents of the 2 bottles in it.

There was some bear scat up near the summit but we never saw a bear.

We returned the same way that we came up. The thick manzanita was actually worse on the way down. I was going around in circles for a while looking for a way through it. A couple of times we just lowered our heads and pushed through it. We eventually made it back to the drainage, which seemed more onerous on the way back -- going through the manzanita sapped a lot of energy so I was tired on the descent.

I was glad to get this hike done, but I can see why not many people do this one multiple times!

There was some decent yellow color in the first portion of the hike.
