| partners | | | On the second half of the first day of our trip to Amarillo we headed to Palo Duro Canyon. Palo Duro like Caprock are on the eastern escarpment of the flat plains of the Llano Estacado. Interesting drive as for hours you are in flat land as far as the eye can see then all of a sudden the land breaks away with colorful canyons. Once at the park we found out most of the park was closed for hunting but there was a small area with some trails that were still open. We hiked the CCC trail which climbs from the Canyon Floor to the rim, about 800 feet of AEG. I had done this trail a few years back and it offers good views overlooking Palo Duro Canyon. The park was fairly empty so we had the trail pretty much to ourselves. On the return hike we took the Goodnight Peak scenic loop. Perfect timing as the sun was about to set. The park is supposed to open up again in 2 days so we will be back. |
