| partners | | On our return trip to Tucson from Lubbock we stopped off at White Sands National Monument. There aren't a lot of good hikes in the park but there is one that is more than a nature trail and that is the Alkali Flat trail. This is a 5 mile loop hike that has a change in elevation of about 50 feet but an AEG of anywhere from 450 to 600 feet. Great views from the peaks of the dunes to the East of the Lincoln Mountains and to the west of the San Andres Mountains. The dunes at white Sands are easier to walk on than the dunes in the great Sand Dune National Park in Colorado, This is mainly due to the material that makes up the dunes (flattish not round) and also that when we were there the sand had a good moisture content.
The trail is marked by posts sticking up out of the sand every so often, you don't really follow a trail just walk from one post toward another. Having a GPS would be useful if you plan on veering from the marked route. The weather was in the 60's and made for perfect hiking. Not crowded at all, We saw maybe a dozen people either on the trail or at the Trail Head, which was nice because if nature calls there are not a lot of bushes. Once back at the trail head we had a little fun sledding on the dunes. No flower report and as for a water report, some at the visitor center.
