| no partners | | After having a crazy day at work, I needed a little fresh air and exercise to sooth my frazzled brain. A quick hike up the Wind Cave trail seemed like a good option. Close to home and guaranteed views of the western horizon.
It was overcast as I started up from the almost full parking area. I came across a couple of hikers/groups coming down and passed a few going up. The trail is the same as it has been since the first time I did this hike back in the Jurassic age when I had to fight off dinosaurs prior to hiking up.
Mr Sun made an appearance just as I made it to the "cave". I kept going a little further after the offical trail stopped and set up in an area right were most people hang a left to make it to the southern peak and the Pass Mountain Ridgeline. I usually have this place to myself once you go beyond the cave, but I actually came across a couple of fellow adventurers.
The cloudy skies gave way to a very vibrant and beautiful sunset. Sometimes you get lucky. I was fully expecting a dud when I saw how cloudy it was at the start. The afterglow was very stunning and lasted quite a while, even after it became dark and I was hiking down. I could still see the orange/red clouds hanging on.
Hiking down I had the place to myself except for one lone hiker who was soaking in the sunset as well.
This place can be a circus at times and I try to avoid hitting it during the prime times, but it always gives me a nice hike with great views. |
