| no partners | | It's been a while since I've hit this cool little peak and decided I would head out for a sunrise. I cheated a little and drove through the Wolverine gate in AJ and drove to the base of the peak via a "nice and smooth FS1356".
I arrived later than expected, so I decided to head straight to the peak as soon as I got around to the northside along Orahai Wash. That was steeper than I remembered for sure. My calves were burning by the time I made it up. I did arrive before the sunrise, so all that pain and suffering was worth it.
I knew the sun would be rising right behind Weavers Needle and that was my goal as far as photos goes. The colors were the opposite of what I expected as they were all in the west. The views up on top are really nice. The sun cooperated and I got my pics.
I worked my way east along the little ridgeline and hike back down towards the Palo Verde Arch (which is actually a window?). The trail down from there is really defined now. There was even some fresh horse droppings along the path.
A quick and mostly easy (but steep) hike in the Goldfields. I needed to get back early, but there are so many opportunities to extend a hike in this area. I drove back the opposite direction along FS1356 and I always forget the crazy steep/rough sections going back that way to the Dutchman Gate that puts you out along Hwy 88 near First Water Road.
One thing I definitely noticed was the complete lack of campers/squatter near gate on FS10. It looks like the powers that be decided to put an end to that circus (for now, at least). That might explain the sudden explosion of camps right along Hwy 88 (especially near Goldfield Ghost town and the Superstition Museum). We are definitely living is crazy time. |
