Oh well, the solution to avoid the circus at this place is to start in the dark. Jason and I arrived a little before 7am and started up. To our surprise, another group was also heading up at the same time. So much for my starting early plan.
The hike up is the same as always. I noticed that the final climb up to the cave is getting pretty worn out. It's wider and contains more scree than I remember from the last time up here. I guess a constant stream of wave surfers have taken it's toll. I also noticed the white arrows all along the trail starting at the boundary. Having come across lost Wave Cavers further up the Carney Springs Trail and along the Lost Goldmine Trail, I guess someone took it upon themselves to bring cans of white Krylon and spray an arrow every 10 feet all the way up? A well placed cairn can get knocked down, but spraying arrows everywhere is harder to get rid of? Sometimes, when a path is not clear, a little indicator is helpful. Spraying an arrow when the path is very defined is pure and simple defacement and I wish the self-appointed trail stewart would spray a big "L" on their forehead so we can all see who they are.
My plan was to get to the cave for the sunrise and then explore the area below the Three Sisters. Jason needed to cross out the Wave Cave hike to just about complete is Superstition Trail coverage. He injured his leg last month, but was up for this one. After getting my sunrise shots, we started heading up along the edge of the formation. Jason did ok and we made it up to the base of the third sister. Such awesome views up there. I was up for going further, but his leg was starting to feel the crazy off-trail steepness. We soaked in the views and then started back down. We will hit this area again when his leg is feeling better and make a proper hike along the "shelf" that extends pretty far along the massif.
On the way down, we encountered the steady stream of hikers we were expecting. But, it was not as busy as I've experienced in the past and the parking lot was not over-flowing onto Peralta Road as I've seen it before. The weather was perfect for hiking, so that surprised me a little.
I am happy to keep this circus isolated to this trail. Peralta Trail gets over-run as well, but it's still avoided the white arrow/Insta-Face mania this one seems to illict. |
