The 12-mile drive from the Algonquin TH to the East Fort TH has always been tediously slow, especially the first 3 miles coming out of Crown King. I had planned for 45 minutes to an hour to get there. Much to my surprise, this is no longer a problem. They have put in extensive roadwork, including grading the entire stretch, laying down 10 miles of gravel, and adding numerous culverts. Other than the occasional water diversion bumps, this is now a superhighway. A standard car could easily make it all the way to the TH. So, we easily saved 20-30 minutes of driving each way.
It's hard to believe it's been 13 years since I was last up here. It was a glorious 66 degrees when we reached the TH. There's been a fire up here since then, and it looks quite different. We made the 1-mile trek up to the ruins to take in the vast views.

This isn't a hike I'd drive to as my only hike, but if in the area (or if you have a friend that's been crying for years to do it), it's a must-do.
We made a stop at Horsethief Basin for a look-see and then enjoyed a burger at the Crown King Saloon. We got there just in time. The band was setting up and the reserved tables made it tough for walk-ins to get a seat. Traffic on the road out was heavier than normal with people climbing the hill to get out of the heat.
On the drive out on 17, I picked up a screw that trashed a tire. Other than that, an enjoyable day. |
