| no partners | | We did this from Slate Creek Divide. Our distance and AEG are guesstimates, and I'll revisit them later when my feet stop hurting. The lower 3 miles are dry, and a passenger car would probably have no problem on FR 626 until the junction w/ FR 1688. We were on FR 626 the entire time. The upper 4 miles, however, were completely covered in snow. I had forgotten how much work it is to hike uphill in the snow, and how much fun it is to hike down. FR 626 was closed at the gate right off of SR 87, and we only saw 2 hunters and Ranger Bo from the Tonto NF. Bo drove his Explorer up to our location just before the junction w/ FR 1688 (? on the # of the FR). He was surprised that we planned to hike all the way to the top, then he tried to continue on. This was right where the snow started, and he had to turn around. He asked us to look for a truck that he thought was stuck a little ways ahead (which he found later on another road). Bo had an AR-15, a 12-guage shotgun (both mounted in the front), and a K-9 unit. Very nice guy, but don't mess around in the Tonto National Forest!
Hiking uphill in the snow did a number on my tootsies, and I'll be feeling this one for days even though the distance/elevation wasn't too wild. Unholy views from the top, but it was really hazy today. Looks like a lot of burns going on. |
