This hike is entirely on a road (FR 626), and the first half is pretty wide open with great views of the portion of the Mazatzals that are north of SR 87.
Soon enough I reached Caldecott Spring (which marks the junction of FRs 626 and 6188 which leads to Little Mount Ord), and that is where the Ponderosas make their first appearance. The trail contours upwards alongside the northern side of Mount Ord until it reaches the FR 27 which is what this hike's description follows until its junction with FR 626 which goes to the top of Mount Ord.
Saw only 2 trucks, and a bunch of Stellar's jays who were too shy to remain in photographic range as usual. Bunch of deer tracks.
This hike is a great training hike as it's on a dirt road and offers a decent helping of mileage and elevation gain without a rough trail. Great views today due to the relatively clear air. |
