A temporary access trailhead is setup near the construction fence. The whole area is being renovated and I'd guess that the trail is going to be rerouted away from the original location near the head of Box Canyon. Our first mini loop wasn't the best choice for this time of year. As expected, we encountered a viper face-to-face on one of the boulder scrambles. A neat little canyon though near the top, that would be more interesting after a good rain. I was relieved to be back on-trail afterwards and we then completed the HNKL loop CW. We skipped the lookout spur, which is now named Dobbins Extension. A few other hikers were on the Holbert, Kiwanis and Las Lomitas Trails, but nobody on National. There also was a small crew working the top section of the Telegraph Trail. |
