| no partners | | I hadn't hiked out in the Blue since 2022, so I figured it was time to head out there. Car Camped Saturday night at the small parking area across from the Bonanza Bill TH and started down BB before sunrise on Sunday. Strong smoke smell and a very light dusting of ash from the Foote Fire burning nearby but nothing horrible. The BB trail is in great shape as always. I was initially going to hike to Franz Spring but once I got to the Tige Rim Trail junction I made the turn into NM and headed up. The trail is hazy in this first section, it's there one minute then gone the next. I got off it a couple of times but it was fairly easy to get back on to. Once I got on top, it got pretty warm and the lack of shade cover did not help. Again the trail in this section is 'kind of' there, not too hard to follow it. Got to the first viewpoint and the views are fantastic! You then drop down into a small valley only to climb back up again. The up-and-down portion continued for a bit and with the views now gone and the sun cranked up, I was really wishing I had stayed on BB. The trail continued to be hit and miss until you got to the lower sections where carins helped (there are no carins up on top). As I got near the last gate (near the BB junction) I came across three cows. Two took off right away when they saw me while the one other, was just a bit more aggressive. It stopped and stared at me as I was walking away. I looked back only to see it start to charge me about 20 yards away. I waved my arms, yelled at it, and threw rocks in its direction but it continued to charge me. At 10 yards away, I pulled out my 9mm, ready to fire a warning shot and it decided that was enough and ran away. Not sure what the deal is with cows out here but this is the second time I have come across aggressive ones. After that little excitement, made it back to the truck and started the drive back. The Tigre Rim trail is a one-and-done for me, besides the views in one or two sections, everything else was meh as the fire pretty much killed the area. On the 567 I came across multiple HotShot crews prepping for potential burnouts if the Foote Fire continued to move, hopefully, that does not happen. Came across a deer and a turkey and zero two legged animals, which is just the way I like it. Gonna try to get back out there before the fall. |
