When we arrived, Gen discovered that she had forgotten her shoes, and tried to use this as an excuse to cancel the hike. We ended up both using cheap flip-flops.
We walked along FR-95T for 0.7 miles to the trailhead, then along the canyon and down the switchbacks. There was an ugly burned area, but it became nicer as we approached the creek. The flip-flops slowed us down a little on some of the steeper rockier descents, but overall it wasn't too bad.
The creek was beautiful and refreshing. We jumped in and played at the first swimming hole. Crawdads were everywhere and some of them were HUGE. I reassured Gen that they would retreat from our feet, but some of them were surprisingly aggressive. After cooling off, we got out, walked along the creek to the little cascades, and played around there.
We then headed further up along the creek on use trails, with a few crossings along the way. When we reached the spot where the trail exits the canyon to the east, we turned around and headed back. While taking a pic of the cascades, I slipped on a slick rock, fell into the water, got my phone wet, and got attacked mercilessly by some of the crawdads. Everything turned out OK, and we headed back out without further incident. When we reached the first swimming hole, there was an extended family of about 12 people playing there.
Saw about 5 other people total along the creek. This is a beautiful, peaceful area, and a great spot to cool off from the Phoenix heat. Will definitely return. With shoes. |
