| no partners | | After our trip to Isle Royale and our stay in Copper Harbor, we needed to break up the 10-hour drive back to my brother’s house in lower Michigan. We had reservations for one night at Wilderness State Park campgrounds, just over the Mackinac Bridge and right on Lake Michigan. We made a last-minute decision to extend our stay to 2 nights and were lucky to get in on a cancellation. With little planning, I managed to fit in this hike the next morning.
From our campsite, we walked 1 mile on a paved road and then 3 miles on a dirt road to reach the first trailhead.
Sturgeon Bay Trail
The Sturgeon Bay Trail starts as an old two-track path with no views through the forest. The best views are at the beginning, where you can see Sturgeon Bay in Lake Michigan. After the intersection with the North Country Trail, the hike gets a bit nicer with some elevation changes.
Swamp Line Trail
The Swamp Line Trail features thick forest, marshy areas, and a creek. Nuff said. It’s a short walk back to the campground. |
