I started this hike to Sawyers Peak (elevation of 9,674 feet and prominence of 1,500 feet) at Emory Pass, which is right on Highway 152. Sawyers Peak is in the Gila National Forest and is part of the Black Range in southwestern New Mexico.

I was on the Black Range Crest Trail most of the way to the summit, with some bushwhacking up a steeper slope at the end.

This area was heavily burned by the Silver Fire in 2013, and there aren't many trees more than about 10 feet tall along the trail. There is quite a bit of vegetation encroaching over the trail -- it isn't terrible but I was glad that I had on long pants. There are quite a few downed trees across the trail, particularly over the last couple of miles toward the summit. I would be very happy if someone had given me $1 for every tree that I stepped over on the hike.

The lack of trees makes for some nice distant views, but all of the deadfall makes the hike less enjoyable than it otherwise would be.

There were quite a few yellow leaves along the hike, mostly oak and the dreaded New Mexico locust.
