The Summit Mountains are partly in New Mexico and partly in Arizona. There is evidence of lots of mining activity in the Summit Mountains, and the range is within the Steeple Rock Mining District.
The last 12 miles or so to where I parked were on a well graded gravel road (Carlisle Road) that most vehicles could navigate.
There was more to this short hike than I thought that there would be. I gained about 1,000 of elevation in the first 3/4 mile, and it was basically going straight up a slope that was slippery with lots of small, loose talus on it. It was slow going for me both on the way up and on the way back down the slope.
Once on top of this slope it was a class 2/2+ rock scramble the rest of the way. It was fun picking a good route to avoid some exposure and some steep drop offs. The geology was very interesting in this section.
I eventually made it to the summit of Vanderbilt Peak and enjoyed the awesome 360 degree views. There were several names that I recognized in the summit register.
I returned the way that I came, and again there was a bit of a challenge in picking a good route on the rock-scramble section.
In spite of the steep slope at the first part of the hike, I really enjoyed this hike. I highly recommend this hike for someone who likes interesting geology, rock scrambling, and some route finding challenges. |
