| no partners | | I found myself in Gallup, New Mexico and decided to do this hike. Actually, this was Plan C for the day, but Plans A and B had to get put on the back burner due to wet roads.
I went up the standard route by following the Pyramid Rock Trail all the way to the summit. This was a nice climb and had some great views at the top.
I was going to come back the same way but on the way back I came to a junction with the Church Rock Trail. I had no idea where the trail went but I decided to take it anyway -- I figured that I could always reverse course if the trail did not work out.
However, the Church Rock Trail eventually went back to another TH, and from there I could take a page out of @the_eagle 's playbook and make a loop out of the hike. This added about 2 miles to the hike, but it was well worth it.
I am really glad that I took the Church Rock Trail because it had lots of red rock hoodoos, spires, and cliffs on it. There were lots of side canyons just begging to be explored. There were lots of slick rock sections of the trail that would have been difficult to follow were it not for lots of rock cairns placed by the park and lots of trail signs on the way.
This turned out to be a great hike. The area reminded me a lot of Sedona with all of the red rocks. I enjoyed the hike up to Pyramid Rock, but the highlight of the hike for me was hiking on the Church Rock Trail. |
