Hopkins Mountain is noteworthy for being the high point of the Salome Wilderness Area. This peaked my interest in hiking this pique.
I parked at the Rose Creek CG and hiked on a road for about 5 miles before heading off-trail up to the summit. Actually, I suppose that I could have driven part of the way on the road.
Most any vehicle can get to the Rose Creek CG.
I had read some trip reports that suggested that the best way up would be to loop around to the west and ascend that way in order to avoid some dense brush. That is what I did, and while the brush wasn't dense it was very steep and there was a bit of up-and-down along the way which added some extra elevation gain.
There were some trees and dense brush at the summit which limited the views.
For the descent I decided to take a direct route down. The grade wasn't nearly as steep as what I dealt with on the way up, but there was some dense manzanita and other brush for about 300 or so vertical feet. I was glad to have gravity on my side to help push through it.
If I was to do the hike again I would once again descend the way that I did, but I am not sure which route I would take for the ascent.
This wasn't the greatest hike that I have ever done, but it was a day well spent in the Sierra Ancha! |

Autumn Foliage Observation Moderate There were quite a few yellow oak leaves along with a couple of maples that were past prime and a bit of bright red sumac. |
