1) Red Mountain (elevation of 5,422 feet and prominence of 1,019 feet)
2) Little Florida Mountains high point (elevation of 5,660 feet and prominence of 1,087 feet)
Red Mountain
(2.99 miles with 1,004 feet of AEG)
Red Mountain is a mound that rises up above the desert floor. It is out by itself and is quite noticeable because nothing but flat desert is around it.
This hike was in a hodgepodge of state land and private land, and to be honest I am not certain which I was on. I drove in on a dirt road that was good most of the way, but then started to get sandy so I parked a bit earlier than I intended.
The hike was straightforward: hike across the desert floor, go up a slope to a ridgeline, and then follow the ridgeline to the summit. I saw a couple of javelina while hiking across the desert floor. There was some class 2 hiking near the summit, with an opportunity for some class 3 climbing if you wanted to seek it out.
There were some nice 360 degree views at the summit, so I hung out there for a bit.
Little Florida Mountains High Point
(2.81 miles with 612 feet of AEG)
The Little Florida Mountains are about 15 miles SE of Deming. The higher Florida Mountains are just to the west of the Little Florida Mountains.
Most people hike to the Little Florida HP by starting at Rockhound State Park and then bushwhack their way to the summit. The temperature was in the mid 80's so I did not feel like bushwhacking. Instead I drove in on Pampas Road, which is a service road that goes to several communications towers in the Little Floridas. It is definitely a 4WD road and I used 4LO part of the way. I got tired of driving the crappy road, parked at a communications tower at 5,440 feet, and hiked on the road the rest of the way to the summit. Even though it was warm there was a strong breeze blowing and I enjoyed the road walk. Views were nice at the summit, especially of the rugged Florida Mountains that are not far away.
Synopsis
This was an enjoyable day of bagging a couple of P1K peaks in southern New Mexico. I thought that Red Mountain was the more interesting hike of the two. |
