This is just what Arizona needs -- another peak with the name "Saddle Mountain". This Saddle Mountain is on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, and its elevation is 4,240 feet and it has prominence of 1,080 feet. This makes it one of 4 "Saddle Mountains" in Arizona that have 1,000+ feet of prominence.

Before going I purchased a San Carlos permit online, so I was good to go.

I hiked from the west by going up a drainage and then up a steep slope to a saddle between the 2 Saddle Mountain peaks. The mountain has a very pronounced saddle shape to it.

On the way up I left the drainage at a class 3 dryfall and ascended up a very steep, slippery slope south of what I intended to do. This was a mistake as I got into some terrain that was a bit sketchy. On the descent, I went from the saddle directly to the drainage, which was a much better choice.

The only bushwhacking on the day was going from the saddle to the summit. There were nice views at the summit, so I hung out there for a bit even though it was cold, overcast, and windy.

There is an easier route to this peak from the southeast, but I decided to hike in from the west to see what it was like. If I was to hike from this direction again, I would drive another mile and park where the drainage intersects with the road. That would avoid having to travel cross country from where I parked to the drainage.
