| no partners | | It's winter and quite cold and dreary today. I wasn't able to get up to the Gap and instead came here to hike the trail I otherwise wouldn't do in tick season.
I hiked from Tuckerton Rd to Quaker Bridge on the very level and easy to hike BaToNa trail. I last hiked this section of the trail in late May of 2000, right before memorial day, with 2 friends on a backpacking trip from Lebanon SF HQ to Batsto Village. Back then we took most of the day getting from BaToNa camp to Lower Forge camp, which is just north of where I turned around. I know I wasn't carrying a heavy pack, but this was a lot easier today than it was nearly 25 years ago. I think, with as much hiking as I have done in the last 19 years, it should be.
It's still decent country, but in 25 years it is not as park like as I remember it being. Lots of places are that way. Forest cover is still mostly pitch and shortleaf pine. It needs fire.
Hardly any birds, but I did see one chickadee. 25 years ago we were followed by peewees similar to what I experienced this past May hiking nearby. Winter is a much quieter time.
There are not many who hike this compared to Tammany, but I did run into 3 other people. 2 were backpacking for the night. It will be cold!
I headed home to comfort, which is my preference. |
