I had this in reserve since the Penn Branch Super Happy Fun Hike with extra parasites adventure!, back in May. After reading that a place I considered visiting near Chatsworth is severely infested with parasites (what isn't in NJ?), I came here.

Drove out to what is known as High Crossing, because the old railroad line crossed slightly above the other roads. I didn't even notice it and actually had to turn around. I started down the road optimistic, but the reality of the location soon crept in. It is a wide enough road, so hopefully no ticks, but the black flies that love to bite are thick right now, and day time misquotes are also out, bolstered by the heavy rain last night.

I incorrectly recalled this being an upland, and the part I walked in May was a nice ridge with shortleaf. I found everything here to be low and wet, a pitch pine low land. Lots of big puddles flooded out the road, and eventually, I just turned back. I know I hiked this in October of 2005 from Carranza to Washington and back, but I also remembered that being on a ridge. The forest and soils didn't change in 19 years, so I guess my memory is wrong. My track shows I was near my goal of where I crossed the road in May, so I guess only a small area is really a ridge. Oh, well.
