We had a group of eight joining us for our trip to the Verde, including two new additions this year: Jess and Bob, who I haven’t hiked with since 2018!
It was a brisk and breezy start as we made our way through the culvert under Bartlett Lake Road. Once we entered the wash—also known as Bootleg Canyon—the wind died down, and the chill disappeared.
We navigated through the deadfall area, passed through the reeds, and took a brief detour up a short slot canyon to explore.
At the Verde, we took our obligatory group photo before splitting up. Linda, JJ, and I backtracked to the starting point, while the rest of the group headed to the shuttle vehicle we had placed earlier.
On the way back, Linda, with her eagle eyes, spotted a small mining ruin and later a hobo camp that all eight of us had somehow missed on the hike down. The camp had been abandoned for at least a few years but showed signs of having been lived in by at least two people for quite some time.
It was great to get together with the gang again.
Happy New Year to all my HAZ peeps! |
