| partners | | I swore back in 2015 I would never do Agua Caliente Peak ever again, but I must of forgot because Ginny and I did it. Really challenging hike. The trail is easy to follow but it is a steady uphill with the last half mile extremely steep. Slow and steady does it though. Great views all along the trail and the crystal clear sky's made it even better (in the morning at least). We took a short 5 minute break at the saddle before heading up to the peak, 1.5 miles up. The last half mile is probably worse coming down because of the loose rock.
No water along the trail, everything was dry. Only a few other hikers, most just going to the saddle. On our way down we took a break at the saddle again and while we were sitting there two mountain bikers came up from the Agua Caliente Canyon side, fairly good trail in that direction. I ask if they were going to the summit and without stopping they said they were. In my quiet voice I looked at Ginny and said "I don't think so". It's a slow steady walk the last 1.5 miles and I can't picture doing it on a mountain bike without a lot of stopping. Maybe they ditched the bikes and walked the rest of the way up.
No wildlife as such on the trail except for one young Gila Monster sitting in the trail. When we came up it started walking along the trail away from us but was hogging the trail. I ended up getting a yucca branch and tried coercing it off the trail so we could get by and in typical Gila Monster attitude it started biting at the branch, eventually it did move off the trail enough for us to get by. Always a pleasure bumping into these guys.
