| partners | | Denny invited me on a South Mountain hike that all the cool kids do (and Linda).
I'm pretty much a SM virgin, so I let Denny and Linda be tour guides on the day. They explained a lot of the history of the area, including showing me some mines. Being the upstanding human that I am, I was cordial and pretended to be listening.
The climb up Pyramid is a nice grade and in impeccable shape. Good views to the cloudy Estrella's, downtown, including Camelback and Piestewa, and the McDowells.
On the National, we traversed our way over to Goat Hill to get up top. Linda kept egging me on to look over the edge at some mines or something, but based on the look in her eyes, I was having none of that.
This section on the backside of the loop changed my less than excited opinion of South Mountain. I can see why the cool kids like this loop.
Down Lost Ranch Trail was a little loose in spots, but NBD. Linda showed me some more of the deeper mines and encouraged me to enter and adjust some of the ceiling supports. Sorry, not falling for that one.
Towards the end of the hike, after a police siren in the distance, we heard what could have been a pack of 30+ rabid coyotes. They were howling, possibly in attack mode. Not fearing for our lives, remembering that Linda had said in the past that we had nothing to worry about, carried on with our hike.
All kidding aside, this was an enjoyable hike with sometimes, "friendly banter". Good hiking with these two again. |
