This was a hike to Point 4367 atop Black Mesa, the high point of the Warm Springs Wilderness Area. This wilderness area is about 30 miles SW of Kingman, and is just south of the Mount Nutt Wilderness. In fact, my parking spot just off of Oatman Highway was closer to the Mount Nutt Wilderness than the Warm Springs Wilderness.

The Warm Springs Wilderness is named for the water temperature of several springs in the area. Naturally, the only spring that I saw was named "Cool Spring". Go figure.

I hiked on a road for about a mile until I got to the wilderness boundary. The road was pretty rough in places, and if you drove all the way to the wilderness boundary you'd need a @redroxx44 mobile!

I continued on the road for a bit past the wilderness boundary and then went off trail to the high point. The terrain was very, very rocky, with ankle busting rock present on virtually every step. This made the going much slower than it should have been.

I eventually made it up to the top of the mesa, and had to deal with a bit of class 2+/3- scrambling in a couple of places. The top of the mesa was very large -- big enough to fit several football fields. I located the summit cairn and summit register; I was the 3rd person to sign the register in right at 11 years.

I took a bit of a detour on the way back to see some wild burros and to see Cool Spring. I had heard some burros honking while I was ascending, but did not see any until the descent. Once I was back on the road, I turned a blind corner and a burro was 30-40 feet away -- the burro high tailed it in the other direction once it saw me.

In spite of the rocky terrain I really enjoyed this hike. It was an overcast day, which made for a very nice day of hiking in this scenic area.
