| partners | | joined up with Walter and Sir Turtle for a jaunt around the Derrick–Horton Loop. We did the loop counterclockwise, starting at the Derrick trailhead (the Horton trailhead is closed while they replace the bridge and use the lot for staging materials and equipment).
The climb up Derrick/Highline isn’t steep, but it gains about 1,300 feet steadily over 3.5 miles to the Promontory intersection. If it’s chilly out, it’ll warm you up. Shortly after Derrick turns into the Highline, you hit the reroute, which is my favorite section until you reach Horton Spring.
We took a break at the spring while Denny tried to get photos of the fish.
The return trip to the trailhead started out rocky, with multiple social trails, before smoothing out.
Because of the bridge construction, the campground is closed, and they route you through it to a new connector that rejoins the Derrick Trail.
We spotted squirrels, a speedy garter snake, and a coyote along the way.
Temps were in the 50s at the start and around 70 by the finish, with a nice breeze. Good to see the usual mental misfits again. Wally thinks he saw Mt. Ord. |
