I set out around 8am on a Saturday in a torrential downpour. The rain lasted for about the first 2 hours of my hike. I chose to take the Horton Creek trail up and the Derrick trail back. I thought I was well prepared for hiking in the rain. The thing I didn't count on was the mud! There were places on this trail that were nearly impassible because of the mud. I spend a lot of my time walking next to the trail to avoid the mud.

Even with the mud it turned out to be a wonderful hike. The rain stopped after a couple of hours and I had a nice overcast day for the remainder. I didn't see one person the entire day. I guess hiking in a downpour isn't normal.

Of course the Horton Creek side of this trail has a great creek along most of it, but I was really impressed with the Derrick trail too. It takes you through some really interesting terrain and foliage changes.

I clocked exactly 10 miles on this (including exploring the creek a lot). It was a good workout but the elevation gain is up and down, not all up anywhere, so not bad at all.
