| partners | | My Buddy Drew and I headed back up to hit the Horton Springs/Derrick Loop since we messed up last time and took a wrong turn per the book description. This time we did it counter clockwise starting on the Derrick Trail so as not to make the same mistake.
Along the way we hit the signed turnoff for the Promontory Butte Trail and decided to add that to our journey. It would appear that this trail gets very little use and it started out fine but was a bit overgrown. Three quarters of a mile up to the top no problem right? Well not so easy, the trail is itself a little steep but fine, the overgrowth and fallen trees present the challenge. About half way up we lost the trail and did a bushwhack/sheer face scramble until we reached the top. It was kind of fun but it added a good extra hour to our overall trip. At the top we found the marked sign to return down the trail proper. About half way down it was easy to see where we lost the trail as things got a little difficult to follow once again.
Back on the main trail we continued on and shortly later came to the Horton Spring. Even though we were just here recently it is still such an amazing place! From the spring we followed the Horton Creek Trail back to the Trail Head. The weather was awesome and doing it this way (counter clockwise with the Promontory Butte Trail addition) added a nice little workout. This loop hike is a Gem in my opinion! I think most would agree! |
