The last time I did the loop there was a lot of deadfall on the Highline trail. But both the Derrick and Highline have had some recent, and much needed, maintenance. It was much appreciated.
I had forgotten how "un-level" the Highline trail is. There is a lot of up-and-down, being particularly steep in portions. The loop is a good workout along with a pleasant, quiet, forest experience. The springs and the start of Horton creek provide one of many jewels among the many scenic spots in AZ - and it is close. Left Mesa at 6 am and was hiking by 8 am, with a stop for coffee at the MacDonalds in Payson. |
