I had a snack on the east side of Black Mesa, and was accosted by a pair of ravens. It was Grand Canyon-esque. I think those birds can smell a granola bar from a mile away.
Black Mesa is a bit higher than Skull Mesa, and it has better overall views, but the trail is much worse. Look for the inconsistent cairns and blaze orange ribbons above the saddle (where you step over the barbed-wire fence) because you'll need them. This trail doesn't see much use after the first mile, and I only saw one faint pair of boot tracks and even fainter horse prints above the saddle, and they were at least 3 days old. The top is relatively flat with large basalt boulders interspersed amongst the deep mud. |
