| no partners | | Whoa. This one's a doozy. I did this from the old SR 87 between Cross F Ranch and the turnoff to FR 201. I wholeheartedly recommend doing this counter-clockwise.
Beautiful, perfect day for hiking, and I enjoyed breathing in some cool, crisp, and CLEAN air for the first time in a few weeks.
As I was meandering down FR 25 just past the Cross F experimental exposition plot I saw a very large raptor alight from a tree near the confluence of the East and West forks of Sycamore Creek just upstream from the Cross F Ranch. I couldn't tell if it was a bald eagle or a golden eagle, but it was obviously much larger than a redtail. It soon drifted away from me (the sun was behind it so I couldn't get a good picture), and a redtail or similar hawk started to harass it. The big hawk was lazily circling with the smaller hawk above it. The smaller hawk repeatedly dove at the big one, and I could tell they were not friends.
I also saw an unkindness of ravens. Always wanted to write that.
The bulk of my hike today was on forest roads. I wouldn't recommend this on a weekend because it's obvious that the roads I walked along see a lot of OHV use. An ATV or something similar had gotten all the way until a few hundred yards before the southern end junction of the Cornucopia/Thicket Spring Loop.
The Cornucopia Trail offers outstanding views of Mount Peeley, and the Thicket Spring portion offers similarly great views of Mount Ord, Pine Butte, and the Sierra Anchas. |
