In the Lost Dutchman State Park use the siphon draw trailhead along Discovery Interpretive Trail to trail# 53 all the way to the top of flatiron. You begin a steady ascent toward the towering cliffs and bizarre rock formations to the east. Trail ends at a broad slick rock basin about two miles from the trailhead, a good turnaround point unless you really want to punish your self. If you're up for a steeper ascent and don't mind some hand-over-foot scrambling, you can follow an unofficial route all the way up to the Flatiron. Consider this, though - the route to the top gains 1,761 feet in eight-tenths of a mile. Just below the top you'll have to climb about 10 or 12 feet almost straight up a rock face. Once you reach the top of the draw, follow the fairly level trail to the right about a quarter-mile to the Flatiron, a large, open plateau from which you'll enjoy outstanding views in all directions. |
