I made another trip south into the Magruder Corridor to hike up to the Salmon Mountain Lookout and camp in the area. I wanted to try some new trails in the Frank Church River or No Return Wilderness. Unfortunately, after a quick scouting trip on my first day out there, I realized all of the areas I had wanted to check out were scorched pretty good in a semi recent fire. Nevertheless, I made the best of it and hiked the lookout twice and explored some undamaged trails connecting to the Lookout Trail.

The hiking around Salmon Mountain was great and we had the place to ourselves. There was some significant snow in spots, but nothing too impeding and all of the trails we hiked were in good condition. The detour to the spring below the lookout was probably the highlight, although, the short hike towards Elk Track Lake has me thinking about future hiking/backpacking trips from there.

I camped at Observation point, which offered some excellent camping. The 8 miles I drove south past Salmon Mountain marked the furthest I have gone in the rugged and remote Magruder corridor. The corridor is a 101 mile single lane dirt road that bisects 3.5 million acres of wilderness, (Frank Church and the Bitterroots). The road was allowed during the carve out of the two wilderness areas. It is said that the area within the Magruder Corridor represents the most remote country left in the lower 48 states.
