From the Wolverine Pass TH I hiked up towards Dome Mt. and 3 Lesser Peaks to check out the 3 Lesser Peaks "trail". There isn't one, which is what Andy had told me. I thought that on the back side I saw one a few years ago when I hiked Dome Mt, but when I got to that turn off, there was nothing. The approach to the peaks looked pretty doable and friendly, but I wasn't in the mood today.

Headed back down and hiked over towards the Deer Tanks Trail with the intent to hike that south and then back to the lot. But by the time I got to FR10 it was nearly 10am so I decided to just hike the road back.

Saw 2 mule deer on the way up towards Dome Mt. I was suprised at how they weren't spooked at all and never took off. Only saw 4 other hikers and 2 4WD riders. Chilly to start, remained fairly cool once the sun hit.

After a long day out on the rugged Peter’s Trail, I was ready for an easier Sunday hike closer to home. I drove out to the southern Bulldog Canyon gate on the south end of FR10 and did a loop from there. I headed north on FR10 and then took FR1356 north and east over to FR3512, headed south and hiked over Blue Ridge back to the Bulldog Canyon gate. It was all dirt roads until the end of FR3512.

The segment of the trail on the west side of Blue Ridge is steep and very dicey. I had to make sure every step I took was on bare rock and not any of the scree covering it. After that it was an easy hike back to the gate.

There can be a lot of traffic on the roads here with the side by sides and bikers, but today wasn’t bad. Only really saw 2 side by sides and no dirt bikes. The human sacrifice pit at the end of Hackamore Road had a fire going as I was headed south towards it. I could see the black smoke rising. By the time I got there flames were still visible and soon burnt out. Someone must have lit the fire not long before I got there. That area has always had an odd vibe and it’s even weirder now since it’s an actual murder scene from almost 2 years ago. Fortunately no incidents today.

Lots of traffic was starting to hit FR10 as I got back, and I was happy to miss it. Nice to get a hike in and get some nice views further in.

Started from the end of Idaho Rd and hiked in a counterclockwise direction. Ground was still damp from last weekends rain. Only saw 1 group of 4 hikers along the way. Some OHV trail damage along the route but I guess that’s the new norm, where it’s all about what “makes me happy” with no regards to what’s right, rules, regulations, etc. The Whiskey Myers song ‘Whole world gone crazy‘ is fitting.

Great hike.

Had planned on Arnett Canyon but was worried about the numerous water crossings so opted for this nice little loop through part of the western Goldfields. I had us all meet up at Los Gringos since I figured we would have a late lunch there after we finished. Deborah and her RV are in town at an Apache Junction Park until the end of January and her friend Clay brot her car down. Both he and my 1st cousin once removed (I do genealogy so I keep track of that stuff  , Cousin Connie's daughter) are flying out tomorrow: Clay to Montana to take care of all those calls he got as a heating contractor and Jenaya to Kona where she lives and co-owns the My Hawaii Hostel (if you're ever in the area). So now that I have the formalities out of the way, on to the hike. Oh, Duke the little black rescue dog was with us too.

I've hiked with them all before and they are pretty good hikers. We headed up the FR10 under an overcast sky on a very cool morning. There were quite a few campers (trailers and tents) as we made our way up to the road until we made the turn to the NW. As we came up the hill you could see the effects of the monsoon and recent rains on the road from here on out. There was a lot more rock exposed on the road.

We made the nice walk to the wash and up to Cyclops (formerly The Mask) and it looks like the monsoon got to that use trail as well; it was pretty hard to follow both up and down. My guests enjoyed hanging around the area and getting some nice photos. I sent them pictures of when it was the Mask. The saguaro that blew out the one side seems fat and happy now that it won the battle🌵. We made our way back down to the wash and checked out the puddles before getting on and off the trail alongside the wash. We encountered another couple who asked us about our route and other than them, we would see no other hikers today.

We continued in and out of the wash until we got to the turn south on the road. Along the way I pointed out the different kinds of trees and plants. I tried to turn too soon to the west and just before we got to the top of the hill we saw a car parked and a guy digging something with a shovel. We thot it rather odd but then we saw an older female and child... however, what they were digging is hard to say :-k . So we retraced our steps and went back down to the main road and got going the way RS said we were supposed to be in the first place.

We continued on the road until it was time to catch the right turn south where we took a break before hiking up the hill to the Ridge. The monsoon also seemed to wreak havoc on this road too with lots more exposed rock and rocks. I do love coming up that ridge as the western Superstitions are revealed; and it was interesting light today. As we hiked around the Ridge enjoying the brightly colored lichen boulders, I showed them what I call The Face.

When we got to the SW side before going down, it looks like there is some new trail going up and to the SW. We also saw about three other use? trails in the area. We made it down the very steep section but at the bottom of that, it looks like there was a blowout that was easy enough to get around. We enjoyed our hike back to the trailhead stopping to admire the scene of the saguaros jetting out of the golden grasses. It would have been an even better 📷 with some sun. As we got nearer the trailhead, we ran across an old tent and tarp in this area that I'm sure was used by somebody but it's been awhile.

It was nice that there wasn't any dust to speak of on this hike. It was chilly for most of it as I didn't take off my down vest. The road near the trailhead was still pretty active as we pulled out. Surprisingly Los Gringos was pretty packed at a little after one on a weekday. We all enjoyed lots of Margaritas :) as well as the rest of our meal before parting company.

WATCH: Starting temp 47.7 and 89% humidity 6.44 miles (low point 2003, high point 2432) avg bpm 123, max 165 (17% in Zone 3 aerobic, 61% Zone 2, 16% in Zone 1) burning 1305 calories (total ascent 1.55, descent 1.41) finishing at 12:53PM

We borrowed the route described by @dixieflyer as "Top Hat and the Arches", but didn't get to the Top Hat part of it.

We started at the Bulldog Canyon OHV Gate, and began walking up the road. We left the road to ascend Peak 2685 and checked out the views, which were impressive, and worth the detour. We headed back to the road, then entered the wash and followed it to Mask Arch, which is partially collapsed. The remaining arch is really good for pictures and there are beautiful views all around.

We returned to the wash and headed to Pyroclastic Cave, which is barely noticeable from the outside, but really nice inside. We took a break from the sun, and played around at the arch near the cave.

Next we followed the wash east to a jeep road, which we exited north toward the Twin Arches. We chilled at the arches for a little bit and climbed around, then found a tiny trail back to the road. (We had gone off trail to reach the arches, but it was nice to return on the tiny trail). We had planned to ascend Top Hat, but took too many breaks and didn't have time, so we headed back to the car.

Overall it was a great day, with nice weather, excellent company, spectacular views, and no snakes.

Early morning hike in the Goldfields. Got on the trail - really a road - around 6:30am. Surprised to find the gate open and that vehicles were parked at various spots along the road. Kind of followed the given trail description. Took FS road 10 to FS 1356 out to the remnants of the ranch (about 2 miles as the road goes) and then a little beyond. Stopped around 2.25 miles in where the road split. Climbed a small hill to get a look at the surroundings. The Supes looked very cool off to the SE with the Flatiron being covered by low hanging clouds. Turned around and went back to where a trail took off to the SW from 1356. I think it was the one in the description, but I'm not sure. It also was more of a road than a trail. It was signed as only for hikers, bikers and equestrian, but it was obvious that it was getting as much, if not more use from vehicular traffic. Followed this trail to where it turned right (west) and climbed a hill. At the top of this hill there was a solid single track (created by a motor bike) that took off to the west. Decided to follow this as it contoured along the hill ridgeline. As it descended the north side of the hill it turned into a rugged dual track that eventually connected back into 1356. Took this back to the TH. Ok hike. Nice distant views, but nothing special close to the trail. Not a fan of road hiking and this is pretty much what this was. That being said, there are a lot of options out here and this TH is worth another chance. Great weather!! No rain, but the clouds created a nice and unusual backdrop for the mountains. Saw a few rabbits and spooked a lone deer.

Perfect hiking weather. Didn't see another person out in the Goldfields. Checked out the broken "Mask". Glad to have seen it in its glory days.

I thot this would be a good introductory hike to the Goldfields for LosDosSloFolks. I texted Kelly to see if she might also be interested since we were going on a Sunday and she joined us; though I didn’t tell Cathy and Greg. And Kelly invited John which was a surprise to me. I knew it was going to be a good day!

First part of the hike is a road walk which is not so bad as the scenery, once you get past the campers, is nice and it is a great way to warm up while walking and gawking. I had way-pointed the entry wash as it’s easy to walk by; been there, done that. It’s a pretty wash to walk through and there are various points of interest along the way including some very full cholla and some nice-looking saguaros🌵. Today we even tried one of the trails that went up and off to the SW so we took that to see where it went which was just to a saddle with some nice views.

Next was through a small triangular pour over before encountering another trail that veered to the NW. Not sure where that one goes but you can see the FR in the distance. I imagine it follows the wash westerly. We, however, hang a bit of a right and as you meet up with the wash again you hang a left (west) and then a right (north) up to Cyclops, formerly the Mask :( . It’s a steep and rocky climb but short and the reward is certainly worth it. We paid our respects and then enjoyed mulling around this area taking pictures of one another.

A couple hikers we saw down in the wash had now made their way up there and were still taking pictures once we had hiked back to the wash and were headed east. The trail goes in and out and along this wash and it’s easy enough hiking either. I like the trail better as the sand gets annoying quickly. Kelly and John had ventured ahead and we got distracted by a little arch and alcove in a big boulder before catching up with them.

We stayed on the trail and they eventually joined us before we hiked in the wash for a while. They got ahead again and I saw a trail that veered up to the right and decided we would take that. It started veering a little too far to the right but I knew a road was not too far away so we just continued and then the trail straightened out after gaining some more elevation. I like it up here rather than in the wash as the views are much better :) .

Next, we hit the road and hiked on that for a bit before making a right (south) turn to head up to the Blue Ridge. There is a little elevation gain here and as you get higher the views become more intense. I think this is an old road that is pretty rugged now but not too bad. Once you gain the top the 300-degree views are impressive especially with the Western Supes to the east and south, the Four Peaks to the east and the Goldfield Mountains behind (north).

It definitely got windier on top. The group split here checking out different things; Kelly, the Creighton 🏀game. It’s fun to wander as you continue to veer left (east) to make your way around. You can continue straight and down the hill but we were parked at Bulldog Canyon TH so we headed west thru a little valley and then up and around and down the steep side going north. They have done some re-routing here as now instead of going straight down a very slippery part of the trail you zig/zag a tad down some bedrock.

Before we knew it Kelly and John were out of site again until we spotted them heading up the other side of the ravine toward the cave/alcove we had all seen earlier. They seemed so minuscule over there as they made quick work up the side. They scared up an owl that Kelly got a great picture of and I did my best putting the zoom feature to work. Hate to miss out on that kind of action. They were up and down fairly quickly and we met up with them at the bottom of the hill and finished off the hike as a group. Still lots of cool scenery to observe as we followed a very faint trail to the parking lot.

We finished off the festivities with a little beer🍺 before parting ways. It was a wonderful day for a hike with a decent temperature and a nice breeze for most of it. Can’t really ask for better other than a little less of the wind when we were atop things.

I just recently completed the videos from my hike of this loop in Dec 2015 as I didn’t realize I hadn’t posted the pictures either. Both are now up and it will be interesting to see what differences there are. I can guarantee you one thing, both videos and pictures from these hikes are with beautiful scenery and beautiful people.

Three part video - each contains music from our very own HAZ's LosDosSloFolks and some of the pictures from them and John and Kelly:

Angela, aka tibber, which has recently changed to "The Tibbernator" :D invited us out to the Goldfields to see a natural arch formation known as "The Mask". One of the two arches comprising the mask has collapsed, so what we actually visited is now referred to as the "Cyclops". Loop shown in photoset.

Not three minutes after arrival at the Idaho Trailhead Johnlp pulled in next to us followed immediately by Kelly (trekking_gecko). We had never met either of these two HAZ regulars prior to this but recognized both of them from their logs we've been reading over the past year. Had no idea they were joining us because why would two ultra strong hikers want to do a measly 7 mile loop with a couple of people 15 months off the sofa? Possibly because tibber didn't want to endure the slow torture alone. :-k

All the others had hiked these trails before on numerous occasions but all day long we kept hearing "Oh...I don't remember seeing that before" or "look how pretty this view is". Hiking with the SloFolks has it's advantages. When we slow you down from a 3.50 mph pace to a sub 2.25mph pace you get to re-experience why we all do this in the first place.

Won't go into a lot of details about the hike as most members have been out here and the photos tell a better story than I can anyway. During the climb up we saw two hikers far below in the wash and exchanged waves. As we were leaving the Cyclops and were starting the descent the two hikers showed up at the top. One fellow was from Wyoming and the other from Canada. They both said "eh" a lot. Angela is from northern Montana originally so they chatted for a while on common knowledge.

John and Kelly had energy to burn so near the end of the loop they headed up a side canyon to investigate a possible arch/cave/alcove we had seen from above. From our vantage point we saw them cause a good sized Great Horned Owl to take flight from his daytime sleep. He flew at Mach 1 for several hundred yards to find a new bed. Kelly has a great photo of the displaced avian in her photoset. :) They didn't find another arch but did find a grinding hole in the alcove used by the Hohokam to get out of the sun.

It was really nice to meet Kelly and John. Very nice people as we thought they would be. Thanks to both of you for the good company and your patience on the trail! Afterwards we enjoyed a nice lunch with Angela at "Los Gringos" restaurant...and thanks again for the invite. :D

I got invited to join Angela, Kelly, and hike with LosDosSloFolks (Greg & Cathy) for the first time in the Goldfields. Lots of nice scenery on this hike. Cool views of the mountains, cactus, and wild flowers. Good conversation along the way.

Blue ridge is very interesting, my first time up there. Spooked a great horned owl in search of an arch which turned out to be just an alcove. Inside the alcove we saw a grinding hole and kitty poop.

Perfect hiking weather. Thanks for having me along. Great to meet Greg and Cathy, see Angela again, and hang with Kelly. :)

angela invited me to hike a loop in the goldfields with losdosslofolks
sounded fun; hadn't been out there in months, and always nice to meet some new haz members
john decided to come along, too
met up around 0830 and did the loop clockwise
didn't remember much about the route to the mask
john and i might have taken a different one when we did it
as others have mentioned, the side of the arch that had the cactus growing through it has collapsed
still a nice window on the other half
spent some time taking photos, then headed east
nice views of 3269, dome mountain and 3134 along the way
took a break somewhere in there
checked out the various rock formations on blue ridge
john and i tried to find what looked like an arch from above - actually a large alcove
startled an owl in the drainage, and found a grinding hole
worth checking out
finished up and had tibber's beers and root beers at the vehicles
weather was perfect
enjoyed meeting and hiking with greg and cathy, and getting out with angela again (you too, lp)
thanks for including me :)
nice to be out in the goldfields again

Nice hike with Kelley this morning. We parked at the Idaho Road TH and did the loop in a counter-clockwise direction. Where the other posted routes for this loop are hiked mostly on 4WD/ATV roads, the route we hiked is primarily on trails. Other than a group of hikers seen taking a break near The Mask we had the loop to ourselves. A little warm but I'll suffer through mid 70's versus the deep freeze others are dealing with :D

Did some wandering around looking for rabbits, managed to not see a single one. Weather was beautiful, great day to be out.

Did a little hunting in NE Mesa for some critters. I had to hurry. I got a late start and didn't put any sun screen on. I didn't expect to find much, and I didn't, but it was still nice to get out before the heat.

in looking for more to explore in the goldfields, found three places of interest that could be linked together in one hike: the mask arches, twin arches and the summit of top hat
john agreed to come along on this half road walk, half off-trail hike
set out from dome mountain trailhead
first went up to the mask, following angela's recent gps route
there was a cairned path up the the arches, and the off trail had good footing and not much vegetation
followed bulldog canyon to forest road 1356, passing the rock house along the way
found the route up to trumpet and echo arches using azlot69's track
it would have been very difficult to get up there without it
as it was, we went up the hard way first, getting close to trumpet arch at a point where we lost sight of echo arch
lots of cactus and scree on a steep slope; slow going
went further west to find a way down, passing three feet from a bee hive, according to john
as we dropped, we could see echo arch, so found another route up to get up close on both sides of this one
headed for top hat, almost all off trail then eventually dropping to the road
went around top hat, then up a drainage to what i think is palo verdo arch, gaining a ridgeline and going up to the summit
this was a pretty straightforward ascent on decent terrain, and the summit was cool, too
great views of the superstitions and four peaks
windy, so we didn't stay long, taking a break back at the arch
went north toward some lichen covered rocks and then down to the road
came out near a fence, corral and cottonwood spring
john found a seep, but i'm not sure that was it
long road walk back to the truck, but plenty of good views throughout
saw one more arch on the way back, near top hat
i have tenny's book, and it's easier to make sense of his presentation after you've seen some of the landmarks
the hike took longer than i thought it would, but we found some cool stuff
stopped for burgers at the handlebar on the way home - good food :)
weather was good all day, just starting to cloud up on the road walk back
thanks for doing this one with me, john
a nice day of exploration in the goldfields

Wanted to return to the Bulldog Canyon area to check out some trails I had looked up on the net to see if we could put something interesting together. Few rabbits and a nice hummingbird poised for us, had wrong camera :( I think we'll get a nice shuttle hike, the next time over there of about 12 miles of easy down hill hiking suitable for most anyone.
