started to do my usual figure 8 from beverly, but have noticed that ridgeline trail has been extended and wanted to get a track for the new alignment
it starts just off beverly-pima connector a tenth of a mile up from the parking lot
more elevation gain and better views from the ridgeline
will probably make this my go to route
two tenths shorter overall
while i was at it, did all of the new extended javelina canyon trail
will post both routes if i can figure out how (route manager special needs) and if new ones don't exist
or i will ask @the_eagle or @lindaann to do it
nice hike, cool enough with a breeze and a few clouds
quite a few people out from 0800 to 1000

didn't get going until around 0915
warm temps but a good breeze
i was a little surprised at how many people were out late morning on a weekday
under two hours, so a good enough workout

Denny invited me to join him on a SoMo workout hike as long as I’d provide some wildlife. We headed up San Gabriel at 0545. Needed a light for a few minutes. Coming off the ridge down to the stone house, the wildlife made an appearance. I jumped about a mile, but that rattler was already in heaven, which was a good thing since my initial step was pretty close to it.

After that, we headed up National, then descended Mormon Lp/Javelina. We opted to finish on Beverly Canyon rather than reclimbing up to San Gabriel. Warm temps, but tolerable. Good workout, and always fun to grab a hike with Denny!

Linda joined me for an early start at South Mountain. We got the first climb out of the way before the sun hit us. Linda showed me my first rattler of the year and it was deceased. ](*,) After that we went down to the rock house and did the Mormon Loop. On the way back we took Pima road to Beverly and over to Desert Classic and back to car for a 6 miler. It was warming up but we were off the mountain by 8:30ish. Trail was in usual shape. Nice to get a south Mountain hike in and catch up with Linda while she is visiting AZ.! :D
You know... Like HAZ, she rocks!! :y:

Harem (Carey, Dan, Christina, Yolanda) hike on South Mountain this morning. The plan was to start from the Francisco Highland Park on South Mountain Ave and 28th Street, but the gates to the parking spaces were closed and locked. So, we started from 24th Street near Mormon trail head and headed eastbound and down on South Mountain Ave to Devastator. There's a nice dirt foot path parallel to South Mountain Ave from 28th Street to 32nd Street, not that there's any traffic to dodge on South Mountain Ave, but plenty of dog walkers. Nice steep rugged climb up Devastator, which we had all too ourselves. Javelina Canyon had plenty of hiker/biker traffic. Fair amount of traffic on Mormon trail, all hikers. Turned out to be a great loop. My first time up Devastator, which I've been wanting to hike for some years now.

I had a couple options in mind for the weekend but decided to put those off because of the heat, so it was back to South Mountain again. This one was pretty much a carbon copy of last Friday's hike...same start time, same route, just a little less crowded on the trails today and not quite as cool at the start.

Early morning hike in SoMo. Started from the Javelina TH around 6am. Did a loop of the “new” version of the Javelina. Took it up to the Mormon Trail and then back on the National, and parts of Pima Wash and Beverly Canyon Trails. Actually a little chilly to start the morning. (I won’t be saying that for long). Encountered 12 hikers, 2 trail runners and 1 biker. Enjoy these mornings while we can.

I wanted to get out on Friday to avoid the weekend crowds, and I started from Pima Canyon pre-sunrise. Cool morning in the mid-50s, and a steady breeze made it downright cold in a T-shirt...my fingers were numb within minutes. But the crowds weren't bad, the sunrise was nice, and two coyotes crossed the trail in front of me along National once I was up the hill and heading toward Hidden Valley. I turned around a little past Buena Vista and looped back on Mormon/Javelina/Ridgeline for something different. Done pretty early...still missed a meeting at work, so that was a bonus.

Nice morning to be outside, and everyone took advantage of it. Parking wasn't bad, but the trails were packed, and it felt like a human obstacle course for most of the hike. Checked out some petroglyphs and metates I hadn't seen before, which provided an enjoyable diversion from the tourists.

Started from the Javelina TH at 6am in the dark along the Javelina Canyon Trail to Mormon, then to the National. About a half mile past the junction with Corona de Loma Trail I turned around. On the way back I took the National where I had hiked the Javelina Canyon trail on the way out. Took the Ridgeline Trail until the last climb where I saw a connecting trail to Javelina Canyon that I never hiked before.

It was pretty chilly when I started but warmed up once the sun hit. It seemed kind of really warm in the last part of the National Trail, but along the Ridgeline the breezes cooled me off.

A simple South Mountain loop on a beautiful Saturday morning. Began at the Javelina Trail. Didn't see any javelina, but was able to observe a coyote on the opposite side of a wash next to the trail. Went as far as Natural Tunnel and headed back. Other highlights were a large petroglyph panel at the Javelina/Mormon Loop intersection and the historic 'A.B. 1935' inscription on the Pima Wash Trail.

We got started a little before 10AM, and Pima Canyon was packed, with almost all the road spots taken in addition to the lot. That, of course, translated into very busy trails. The tourists were out in full force...someone stopped me on National and asked, "Is this the way to the rock formation?" When I asked which one, she said, "Any." If you're looking for any rock formation, I guess you're in luck.

TBK wanted to go all the way down to Mormon TH, so I went ahead and did two laps down and back up. The crowds were terrible--I think I preferred the Santas last week. On the hike out, I did a second lap on Marcos de Niza to make it a double-double. Aside from the crowded trails, it was a nice day to be outside--there were scattered clouds throughout, but very little haze and temps in the upper 60s.
