It had been a while since I had a good climb. I also had been wanting to drive the east end of 62 (Box Canyon Road). So Florida Canyon trail looked like a good candidate. I'd only been on this trail once years ago, and then it was hot and I only had time to get to Robinson Spring.

Box Canyon Road is pretty scenic as it winds through a twisty canyon. It's basically a well-graded shelf road passable by about any vehicle (except trucks with trailers, to which it is impassable because of the hairpins). About halfway through there is a dry waterfall that cascades down a cliff right by the road, which would be a sight to see in a heavy rain.

At the trailhead I was surprised to find the parking area overflowing... on a Thursday no less. This trail has a reputation for being sparsely used. I had to park on the side of the road just outside the parking area, in a line of parallel parked cars. Several vehicles had out-of-state plates.

On my prior trip several years ago I remembered the trail to be sunny, hot, and exposed. It wasn't that bad this time around, perhaps because it was mid-morning and earlier in the year so the shadows from the trees were longer. It was also a bit overcast and cooler.

I passed one pair of hikers below Robinson Spring. The spring had water but it was fairly low down in the spring box, so bring longer arms if you plan to tank up there (preferably muscular ones because the steel lid is a bit cumbersome to move). There is a trickle of flow in the adjacent creek, so those with wimpy T-rex arms are in luck if they can be a little patient.

The switchbacks above the spring were a sweat fest with lots of loose rocks. I could feel the lack of recent climbing experience and was grateful for trekking poles. I was even more grateful when it leveled out as the trail entered Florida Canyon proper, and big pines started popping up. I passed two more hikers on this stretch.

The piney section was delightful and lovely. I passed a couple of birders below the creek crossing, intent on some feathered activity nearby.

I tried poking around to find Florida Spring, but had no luck finding any surface water. On some maps the spring is near the drainage where the trail crosses, but the HAZ spring location is nowhere near the trail. There is a network of water pipes, and I did find a repaired section with water spraying out so water is somewhere. I wasn't up for bushwhacking to follow the pipes away from the trail though, and there didn't appear to be any trail branching off to a spring. So I just continued plodding up the mountain to the saddle. I was definitely feeling slow; it had been a hard week at work (framing) and I hadn't done a good AEG hike in a while. I stopped for lunch about 3/4 mile below the saddle since I wasn't making the progress I'd hoped.

In the burn area just below the saddle I think I found the rest of the hikers responsible for the full parking area: the Green Valley hiking club.

At the saddle I enjoyed the view and ate some more snacks. Eventually the birders showed up, but for a while I had the place to myself. I asked if they'd seen any exciting birds, and they effused about a "buff-breasted flycatcher" which was rare and super cute. I was imagining a feathered bodybuilder with enormous pecs and couldn't see that as particularly cute, though I had to acknowledge the possibility that "buff" referred to its color rather than its state of fitness. A later image search confirmed the latter theory was more likely correct.

I left the birders behind to make up some time, since it took me so long to ascend. Normally I hate steep downhill descents, but this one wasn't bad at all, with a possible exception of a few segments of loose rocks on the lower portion. Still, most of the downhill parts were more like a controlled fall than a hike.

About halfway down I stopped to take a picture, then sensed some movement. I took a step and then whatever it was exploded into a lightning-fast scramble down the hill and out of sight. It looked like a raccoon-sized blurry dog with shaggy brown fur and an enormous bushy tail. A later image search confirmed that I saw a very terrified coatimundi. For the record, they do poof up their tails when scared, not unlike a house cat sticking a paperclip in an electrical socket.

Back at the UofA facility I saw a harem of turkeys who didn't mind posing for a photo shoot.

Made it to the car at 4pm on the nose, having left the saddle at 2pm. There were only two other cars in the lot.

Fabulous day.

Was eyeing E Supes but with this heat decided to go for a summit at elev. already. Florida Canyon had been on the wish list for 4 years. Mccleary came on to the radar bout two years ago. Had to convince the others it's worth the drive.

Met at 6:30 to go for this bad boy. Start hike after 9. This outing was exactly as I'd envisioned. Was able to keep a strong pace for the 1st 3 miles but then the constant EG started slowing me down.

After 4.5 miles and 3500 ft gain, we made it to the saddle. Chilled there some before continuing upward. Onto a trail I'd never even heard of. Blocks of ice as PHX hits record highs.

The turn off for the summit is unmarked and there is even a log to seemingly discourage others from taking this route. Sometimes I just guessed but was able to stay on track. Once again, no registry. Contemplated placing the one I brought but decided against it. Took a nasty tumble during the descent of the off trail section. Feeling it today.

As an aficionado of tough hikes, I don't how I overlooked this one. Need to venture out a bit more. Found the trailhead easily and the dirt road coming in was groomed to perfection. Almost hit a deer on the way in, first of many wildlife encounters for the day.

Temps in the low 70's to start and within a half mile I was regretting my choice of wearing shorts for this hike. It's very overgrown with grasses, cat's claw and other brushy plants. Big thrill of the day was being able to see the bear that had been depositing impressive amounts of scat along the trail. He saw me and tore down into a ravine and scaled the other steep side with little effort. Ran so fast I could barely get my phone out in time to attempt to snap a picture.

This has to be one of the prettiest trails in the Santa Rita's, I was kicking myself for never coming here before.

I did this trail twice - once on 12/4 and the other on 12/5. Monday's hike was hard and I got weak and light-headed. I hiked up 3.5 miles and felt sluggish. I had a free hotel stay from my credit card points, so I rested Green Valley, so I could hike again tomorrow.

The second hike was much stronger, even though I felt fatigued and didn't sleep well. Snow was present at 6800+ft. The snow was slippery, but I could have made it to the end, but I didn't feel like going down in the snow.

There were only 2 people on the trail. It was an average hike. Lots of deer. I saw what looked like bobcat scat. I was hoping to see more wildlife but I wasn't expecting much.

I thought today would be a nice day to hike Peak 8853 once more. It was. The sky had clouded over by the time I arrived at the trailhead and so while it was very dim I was not able to see much of the eclipse. My best views of it were in town, and about an hour into the hike when the clouds cleared. Like a bite taken out of the sun.

#145 is in good shape most of the way. The upper limits near the saddle are overgrown and there are a lot of grass and aster seeds, but that should pass in a month or so. All the dead fall on the crest trail has been cleared between Florida and Pine Saddles. I am optimistic for the stretch to Baldy Saddle. Pretty standard hiking up 8853 for a 4th summit of that. Still warm on top, and a little humid, too.

After 8853, I descended from Pine Saddle to Shovel Saddle. I like the area and it is always very peaceful there. It was almost hot hiking to McCleary Saddle, but once over the ridge and in the shade it cooled. You can tell Shovel Saddle is a turn around area for most 4 Springs hikers as it is pretty overgrown beyond Shovel Saddle.

Armour Hot Dog Springs was flowing a lot more than I expected. I guess it wasn't as dry in the north end of the range, as it was near Baldy. Gambel Oaks are "peaking" east of the spring. It was then a pretty nice hike back to the TH. Saw no one when more than 2 miles from the TH. I thought I heard someone at Florida saddle, but never saw anyone.

Makes an interesting sound as it drips and air gets up into the crack. Might be near a half liter per minute of flow, but it is on the wall and mostly enters the rock below.

I got sick when I returned from Kenya. Whatever I had drained my stamina. I'm trying to regain my stamina back by doing a big hike once a week. I'm also going to Utah on Friday to hike the Rockies. I also looked for snakes on the way up and did not find any. I was hoping to see more wildlife but am satisfied with what I was able to find.

This was one of those “what was I thinking!?” sort of hikes. I mean, low elevation in May? It was pushing 90 and I got a late start since I bought a gear hauler for my CRV that morning. The gear hauler is pretty sweet and I wanted to test it out on a trail, so I pulled it to the Florida Canyon trailhead. Since I was there, why not hike it?

My dad would routinely hike in the Superstitions and in the South Mountain preserve in Phoenix in the summer. This hike reminded me that I am not my dad.

Hiked with Brian and Jim up Florida Canyon trail to Florida saddle at a pretty steady pace, then up the Sawmill trail toward Florida peak. Then had to bushwhack the final 1/8 of a mile to Florida peak. First time here. Amazing views, great workout, saw some patches of snow above 7,500 feet. We'll probably go back to Florida saddle for other destinations someday.

I chose this trail because I believe that this is the trail that I'll most likely see a mountain lion. I haven't seen one since 2011. I did see mountain lion tracks. I just have to time my trip better. I'm guessing the distance because I wasn't able to make it up to the saddle due to the snow. The snow was too deep, and it slowed me down too much. I hiked 2 and a half hours up and 2 hours down. If I saw more lion tracks, I would have continued. This is one of my favorite trails, and I don't hike it nearly enough.

The snow is melting with the warmer temperatures so I was able to hike Mount Ian despite the remaining stretches of ice covering the trail. Bring traction if you prefer, or wait a few more weeks. I came from Florida Canyon, so have no idea of the Baldy conditions.

Probably a one and done for me, as this is a little longer than I care to do routinely and I found Ian to be less of a summit than Wrightson or 8853, and a lot longer than Florida Peak, all of which I might do again this year. Well, Wrightson I definitely will. Best thing about Ian is the view of Wrightson, actually.

Ian isn't a very popular summit on HAZ, but it seems to be for the local hiking clubs. Still, it looked to get only a few groups a year.

Set out to go as far as I could or Mount Ian. With the snow and ice on the trail being limited to colder and shady locations, I was able to get Florida Saddle and a fair distance beyond on the Crest before I could see there was a lot of white stuff for the portions on the side of Ian. I can wait and come back another day when days are longer. Maybe spring, maybe late winter, but before it gets hot in the first few miles.

The purpose of this little jaunt was to collect some seeds of the Scarlet Creeper plant from the dying vines, which were ridiculously abundant this summer. I had gathered some while in the Chiricahua Mountains in early September, but the pods were still green and the seeds possibly immature, so I wanted to find some that I knew were viable. I almost waited too long, since I needed to see a flower to be sure I was gathering the right ones. These summer vines can look pretty similar and tend to all twine together. Fortunately there were a few that still had some late flowers, so mission accomplished. :) I didn't have to go far up the trail, and basically hung around near the research station in my quest. The amount of plant growth everywhere I have been this summer has been off the charts. :o

Went to Florida Peak from Florida Canyon. The upper parts are nice, the lower not so nice. No one is over here, so that was nice. Warm going up, hot coming down. Trail and everything is super dry. The only water I saw was the pipe dripping 1/3 of the way up. I placed a rock to impound some water for wildlife.

All day up/down/out/back route. Up FC145 to the saddle > down CC149 to the end of the road > back up to the saddle > down ESC146 > continue on GV79 > turn around at the wilderness boundary > back up to the saddle > back down FC145 to the start. Quality trails - upper FC has a few downed trees, upper ESC is moderately overgrown, CC and GV are in great shape. Very dry out there, just thin snow patches up high, only useful water at Sawmill Spring.

Topping off a great day, at dusk while descending along a small drainage with a trickle of water in it, saw a big, long-tailed brown cat streak up and out the other side of the drainage and vanish in about 2 seconds - mountain lion sighting!!

Exploring a new area and getting a new summit, even if most don't go to the top of Peak 8853. I did. It was actually a nice summit, and not windy today. Florida Canyon trail is not in it's peak season, but was still enjoyable. The upper parts with pine reproduction were my favorite. The crest was also pretty nice, and because I had made the saddle to the south of 8853 faster than expected, and because it didn't look too far, I went to the top. Glad I did.

This area feels almost like an entirely new range for me, since I have never been over here. I always stuck to Wrightson. Now, I might supplement Wrightson for Humphrey as long as I am down here since 4&1/2 hours is kinda far to go for Humphrey, but I would like to think I will also hike this and the Crest Trail again, even if only to this peak or the the next one south, PK 9146.

Headed down to the Santa Ritas to check out a couple more trails. We started off at Florida Canyon TH in order to shorten the drive (although adding on Florida Canyon trail clearly adds to the overall time and effort). It felt pretty warm early on, but that may be because of the exertion it takes to get up to that saddle. I was doubting at that point whether it would be a good idea to do the full route.

We headed onto Sawmill trail, and I suggested that while we're up there, we might as well bag Florida Peak. So we did, and the view was worth it. We tried to reconnect with Sawmill by sticking to the east side of the ridge, but that turned out not to be a time saver.

The descent down Sawmill had lots of variety; some really scratchy shrubs up high, nice mature ponderosa pine forests, and a dense thicket of young pines that will probably have to be thinned out at some point. The spring was flowing, with a nice clear pool, so I mixed up more electrolyte drink and grabbed an extra bag of water just in case. Below the spring, Sawmill Canyon had water off and on all the way down to the road.

The forest road section (which happens to be part of the Old Pueblo 50 course) was a little miserable. Cloud cover was increasing, and it alternated between hot and exposed, and nice and cool, based on whether there was a cloud overhead. When we got down to the main road, the crossing at Cave Creek was dry, so grabbing extra water at the spring turned out to be a good decision. A couple miles up the road, the creek had water.

Cave Creek trail was fairly enjoyable, with the lower section along the creek being at a very reasonable grade. We stopped for one last water fill about a quarter mile before the wilderness boundary - and at the wilderness boundary the creek had dried up again.

Around this time, we heard the first thunder, with one flash of lightning being probably within a mile. The rest of the way up to Florida Saddle there was occasional thunder - nothing close, but enough to motivate me to get up and over as fast as possible. In retrospect, the storm clouds provided some much needed coolth and even saved me up to half an hour!

The run back down to the TH was a nice cruise; either I had some adrenaline left from the lightning, or actually taking in enough electrolytes had an impact... Managed to get down from Florida Saddle in about 55 minutes.

Good day overall, but I don't know if I'd do this loop again, just because of the forest road section...

The plan was to do McCleary, but we got a pretty late start and we were not really feeling the peak by the time we got to the Armour Spring area. In particular, Carrie was definitely good with just seeing a new trail and taking in some nice views from the saddle, because she was coming off a 50k trail race the day before and that last little stretch is not the funnest in shorts, so we turned around and returned the way we came. Quick hike back. A little warm at the bottom.

WOW! Where do I start? Of all the times we had slated, then canceled this one in the last couple of months, we reeeeally should have today. After a night of rain and hail in Tucson, and the forecast calling for 50% chance of more today, we set out to do our best at stomping out the Crest Trail. Once at the trailhead, the unravelling began; One could almost hear the ginormous storm push its way around Wrightson, just kissing the top of McCleary :scared: . Then, we saw that a newly updated "closure" notice had been posted, now bounding at Florida Saddle due to killer grizzlies in the area :scared: :scared: or somethin (about 4-1/2 miles up canyon), AAAaand... my feet were really hurting :( . ...so, with no real rain gear or means of fighting off the ravenous gang of killer bears, we said "pfftt" and went on.

Most of the trip up was a blur, but I recall the scenery being nice. I do know that JJ disappeared much more quickly than normal, due to my going at half speed. At some point, whilst waiting around for me at the saddle, I think JJ figured I had been eaten by bears and he doubled back to find my remains. Well, let me tell ya, that worked out nicely for me, as my feet were done. I had no issue stopping a 1/4 mile short of my goal and heading home today.

The trip down was nearly as painful, but seemed to go much quicker for some reason, and again the scenery was very nice. As rough as this little 8 miler ended up being on me today, it was still better than hangin around the house. :)

Thanks for driving down JJ. A pleasure hiking with you, as always. Let's shoot for a redo before the snow comes.

Rain and the Aggressive Bear closure thwarted our efforts to do Mt. Wrightson via Florida Canyon. Apparently you can only go as far as Florida Saddle until 11/16 due to the closure which actually worked out just fine as there was a HUGE dark cloud hovering over Mt Wrightson just waiting to dump on us.

It was still a great hike gaining nearly 3500 feet in less that 4.5 miles. Always good to see Matt as well. I'm glad the asphalt put the hurts on his feet yesterday. Otherwise he may have beat me up the hill. The man has lost some weight and looks geared up to go! :y:
