This was another one of those insane hikes that Linda lures me into. This time, she told me that there was a "Beef Lovers BBQ" happening at the campsites where the West Fork & Cathedral trails intersect. As you may well have guessed, I fell for it and there was no BBQ when we arrived there. Well, now that we'd come this far, I wasn't going to turn back. We had covered a lot of ground and maybe as much water to get here. The scenery heading up the West Fork is top notch at all times, and in all directions. With the recent rains/snow, the water crossings were as high as could be crossed by most, and kept our feet wet for a solid 5 miles to the Cathedral campsites.

With unhappy feet and disappointed with the whole BBQ ruse thing, I dug out the single, stale, half crumbled saltine cracker that I had been saving for such an occasion and ate that. Meanwhile Linda adoringly dined on a slab prime rib while we rested before the remainder of our adventure.

The beginning of the end came all too quickly, and too did the heat of the day as we dawned our still mushy, wet footwear and started up the Cathedral Trail. Had it not been for a single trail runner arriving at just the right moment, Linda was about to toss me into the canyon for sniveling too much. Eventually, we got over the saddle and were on the homerun - shade, waterfalls, streams, a breeze and above all, elevation loss. Somehow, that didn't seem to deaden the misery of mushy footwear though, and I made that fact know the rest of the trip - just ask Linda.

Anyway, We got out of there alive and saw some pretty cool things along the way. Thanks Linda for driving all the way down for this one. It was one to remember, even if there was again no BBQ.

My buddy Keith suggested a loop starting at Esperero, going over Cathedral Saddle to West Fork, and returning to the Sabino parking lot via Phoneline. We'd stay the night above Bridal Veil somewhere. So we set out on Friday morning, only to have Keith bow out 30 minutes into the trip for medical reasons. He handed me his Garmin communicator and wished me well while he returned to the car.

On my own, I pressed on. Made it to the falls before noon and had lunch, and replenished water. Mostly had the falls to myself; shortly before I left another hiker showed up and left about as quickly as he arrived. He was the last person I'd see till Hutch's Pool the following day.

Esperero above the falls is not my favorite. It's exposed and hot, very steep, and still pretty crispy from the Bighorn fire. I embraced the suck and attained Cathedral Rock Trail. I'd never been on it so didn't know what to expect. It's actually a pretty nice trail. Not as steep, not as crispy (until you get to the saddle), and there were actually flowing drainages and great views.

Cathedral Saddle wasn't much to write home about. Never having been there I was entertaining the idea of settling for the night, but it was basically a lightly crispified snarl of scrub oak. There were nice views of Cathedral Rock though, so I took some pictures and rested a bit before heading down to West Fork. I knew there were great campsites around the junction there, so that was my plan.

I hadn't seen any snow on the trail till Cathedral Saddle, and there was still quite a bit up high. I had to pick my way down but only slipped once. The downhill is very steep and my feet weren't happy with me, especially since I had already put about eight miles on them to get to the saddle. The trail was at least recently maintained, brushed, and totally clear.

Made camp at the junction around 4:30. Briefly entertained the thought of pressing on to Hutch's Pool since there was enough daylight left, but I was tired and didn't know if other campers would be at the Pool or not.

It was a warm night so I didn't bother with the fly. My only super light sleeping bag is a 15-degree, so that's what I packed, and I was worried it would be too hot. I unzipped it and used it as a blanket and it was definitely toasty but not bad. I hoped for stars but the sky had a thin haze and there was a full moon staring into my tent all night, so oh well.

Slept reasonably well, got up at 6:30 and was packed up by 8. Without any appreciable uphill, and very well used trails, I made much better time the second day.

I made it to Hutch's Pool, which had heavy flow coming through, and sure enough there was a camper there. Though he was packing up to leave when I arrived. I stopped to filter more water and hung out for a bit before moving on. I was dreading the first crossing after Hutch's, as it's always a bit dicey, and the creek flow was more than I've ever experienced. It took a while but I managed to bushwhack my way around to where I could sort of safely rock-hop across.

As I got closer to the junction with Sabino, I saw more and more hikers. Some had very wet feet. The last crossing before the junction was also impassable without a bushwhack workaround, but I was able to manage and keep my feet dry.

I hadn't been on the trail through Sabino before, except for part of Phoneline probably twenty years ago, and the views are great. I made it back to the car at 2pm, and Keith was there waiting for me with a cooler full of IBC root beer! (He had been tracking my progress using his Garmin.)

Camped up in the Cathedral. The climb up with extra water for a dry camp was brutal. The camp up there was worth it. The hike out via west fork was nice. Good cloud cover most of the way luckily

Hadn't done this in a few years, so when a close friend suggested it, I decided it was high time to give my legs another pounding. We made it up Cathedral in about 3:45--the cairns from the saddle were abundant and helpful. The ropes to the inner sanctum (I think that's what people have been calling it on here??) and to the summit block were in usable condition with adequate anchors (I free soloed up, inspecting as I went--then my partner used the ropes). Still waiting for the day I get to see an Arizona Black Rattlesnake--the critters were scarce today. We jogged once we got to the West Fork trail. Stopped for a refreshing dip in Hutch's Pool, then jogged out via the tram road. We added a bit at the end to make it an "ultra marathon" distance. Stats are from my partner's Garmin Fenix watch. I don't see how there could be 7000+ feet of AEG on this route.

Got a very early start up Esperero and met @jrousoshammond at Bridalveil Falls in time for coffee (he'd camped there Saturday night on his way from Pima to Sabino.) We set out for Cathedral around 8:30.

From Cathedral Saddle to the summit area was slow-going. Steep, ice-patchy, brushy, at times nerve-racking. It was also snowing on and off. There were cairns to follow, but I get the sense they mark more than one route. Directions for the route we ended up using are basically: (1) go straight up the little ridge from the saddle - there's a trail for this much; (2) when the trail fizzles and the ridge levels out, head to the next little ridge over to your right; (3) make for the line of cliffs which extends to the south of the summit rock; (4) meet the cliffs and take a right, following them northward; (5) as the cliffs come to an end, take a left to head up to the summit area.

Lots of neat formations to check out up there. The rope up to the very top was intact, but I wasn't comfortable going up. Still got great views of Pusch Ridge, Romero Canyon, Sabino Basin, and plenty more.

The the north leg of Cathedral Rock Trail was easy to follow, but steep and thorny. It was a relief to land down in West Fork, which must be the most lovely riparian area in the Catalinas. By the time we left the forest it was, in stark contrast to conditions up top, warm and sunny. The heavy flow made for one tedious crossing near Hutch's Pool, but other than that we were able to book it through West Fork and Sabino Canyon, and made it to the road *just* in time to catch the last tram back to the visitor's center  .

I started at exactly 7:30 with a cloudy sky that was supposed to last most of the day. Ahead of me was fog, which was supposed to burn off around 8:00 or 9:00. No matter, I entered the fog at around 8:15 and was in it until noon. By the 3 mile mark, I was completely soaked, and my feet stayed that way until I finished. I wish I could say I enjoyed my hike, but frankly, my feet were in agony 90% of the way. It was nice to get out, it was just too soon after yesterday's rain. Sabino is flowing more heavily than I've ever seen in the upper part of the West Fork. It was actually really tough to cross without getting all wet, and I eventually did give up on staying dry and just plowed through thigh deep :? .

Well that one is done and over, but somehow I feel the need for a do over. I haven't crossed it off the list yet.

Historical log. Can't remember the actual elevation gain because I also added in Seven Falls/Bear Canyon. Long day! The cairns helped to get the summit of Cathedral. I didn't use the fixed rope.

Long day, with lots of afternoon sun.The only water seen was in the Hutch's Pool area, however there was plenty of poison ivy in Esperero Canyon, and along the West Fork Trail too. We went to Gavi's for post hike refueling and hydration.

Happy Birthday to me! For my birthday (and training for Rainier) we decided to do Cathedral Rock as a loop.

I had a bit of drama to start as at least one person signed up for the hike who didn't have a clue what 24 miles with over 5000+ elevation gain meant. Luckily, I was able to convince her that the first hill we went up was actually pretty flat and her and her friend turned around.

Around Bridal Veil Falls we encountered poison ivy invading the trail. It was thick!

At the Cathedral Rock saddle, we lost another person do to a sore knee. We sent him back down the trail with plans to call for help if his car was still in the parking lot when we were done.

Then we bushwhacked up to the Inner Sanctum and enjoyed that for a bit before climbing the actual summit. The rope for the climb was in reasonable conditions. It's a pretty hefty black 11+ mm static rope. Joel free climbed whereas I used the rope a bit. The entire 6 man party got up the rope even though only Joel and I had experience climbing. Then we almost all went up on the summit past the scary step. What views! A great way to celebrate one's birthday!

On the way back to the saddle, someone thought they saw a big horn sheep as the backside was bigger than a deer and white tail was flashing in alarm.

The rest of the Cathedral Rock trail is getting to be a bit overgrown and has some downfall over it but it's still pretty easy to follow.

We ran into some backpackers at the West Fork Junction on their way to Hutch's. I swear one day I will stay at this junction. It has to be one of the prettiest camping areas in the Catalinas! I was content to at least just sit there for a bit and rest.

We did run into some more patches of poison ivy before we left the canyon floor. The wind started in on us while we hiked. I was glad as it would have been pretty miserable just being baked by the sun.

Finally, Hutch's Pool! What a delight to see! I instantly took of my boots and climbed in! That break was enough to refresh us to get the top of the Sabino Canyon road. From there we went on autopilot and made it back to the cars.

Prior, I had only done this trek as a 3 night backpack, never dreaming I'd be able to crank out the whole thing in one day. What an awesome feeling it is to go above your own expectations!

My first mistake was wearing new, not very broken in boots. The second was packing some overnight gear in case I felt like camping. It all amounted to a great workout though. The GPS took 3 spontaneous naps throughout the day, so I did my best with the mileage and the gain

fourth time is a charm. snowed out twice previously, and almost blown off cardiac gap for a third failure, i finally found perfect weather for this fabulous loop. excellent flower show in stretches, running water everywhere and perfect temps...yahoo!

with the backside of cathedral rock trail finally done, i've hiked all the formal trails on Pusch Ridge

came back on phoneline then down historic sabino 23A for the first time. that's a cool little connector between the road and phoneline

Hit the trail at 5:30am and began making my way up Sabino Canyon road with my headlamp. I always enjoy hiking in the dark and this morning was no different. I even woke up several deer just after turning onto Esperero Trail.

I have only hiked portions of Esperero and was excited to finally hike the entire length of the trail. Cardiac Gap was not nearly as bad as I had been dreading and by the time I reached the top of the switchbacks the sun had just begun to rise. I encountered my first patches of snow at 4800 feet and by the time I reached Bridal Veil Falls the trail was completely covered in snow. I took a short break to admire the icicle covered falls and contemplate why I had neglected to bring my camera ](*,) ! The final section of Esperero between the falls and window rock/cathedral rock junction is definitely the steepest portion of the trail and much more difficult than Cardial Gap.

After turning right at the junction the snow slowly got deeper as I followed Cathedral Rock trail to the pass. Luckily there were footprints from previous hikers that made route finding all too easy. In short order I reached the pass and a took a couple minutes to admire the view. The hikers footprints I had been following turned left at the pass and headed up to Cathedral Rock. As tempted as I was to follow the tracks, I knew the seasonal off trail closure was in effect and I would have to wait until May to summit Cathedral rock.

Dropping from the pass down to the West Fork Trail was by far the most challenging part of the hike. The footsteps I had previously followed had headed to Cathedral Rock and I was forced to find my way through at least a foot of fresh powder. I made slow progress as I attempted to follow the snow obscured trail. With every step my boots plunged deep into the snow and filled with more powder. On several occasions I even managed to locate a few knee deep snow drifts! Perhaps early January is not the best time for this hike?

At the intersection with West Fork Trail I turned right and increased my pace to make up for the time I had lost in the deep snow. While West Fork was still covered in snow, it was much easier to follow and only had a couple inches in most places. Slowly the amount of snow began to decrease and by the time I reached Hutches Pool the trail was snow free. I was the only person at Hutches Pool so I took a short break and changed out of my wet socks before hitting the trail again.

As I turned onto Sabino Canyon #23 I was really beginning to get tired and drenched in sweat. Only in Arizona can one go from walking through more than a foot of snow to baking under the sun in only a couple hours! The 2.5 miles of Sabino Canyon #23 really seemed much longer as my muscles began to cramp and exhaustion set in.

I had considered following the Phone Line Trail back to the parking lot, but decided I was fatigued to the point where it might be unsafe. Instead I decided to switchback down the hillside and follow Sabino Canyon road. After reaching Sabino Canyon road I knew the end was close and I decided to speed things up a little bit by alternating running/power walking. 3.7 miles and 45 minutes later I arrived in the parking lot!

Now I just need to wait until May so I can do the entire loop AND hit Cathedral Rock!

This is one of my favorite backpacks. Mainly because it requires no drive! Plus it's one way to enjoy a great loop hike without the agony of a long day hike!

Our group of 5 from SAHC started at 10:00 on Friday and took the Esperero Trail to Bridal Veil Falls. My load was about 35 pounds. On the way up to Cardiac Gap, I looked for the crested saguaro and was glad to still see that it was there. We took a nice long break at Cardiac Gap before proceeding to the Falls. The bummer about Bridal Veil Falls is that the Falls is usually only dripping, few tents spots, and it's in the shade. But there are good things about it including that there is water and it's right before the major climb up to Cathedral. We made camp and then gathered wood for a small fire to help extend our evening. Joel and I had my dehydrated Mac, Cheese, and Veggie meal with a couple packs of tuna. Steve gave us our Christmas stockings full of minature goodies.

On Christmas morning, we hit the trail about 8:30. We made it up to the saddle next to Cathedral close to 10:00. We headed off to the west along a route up the ridge and then after a bit started picking our way through the rocks off to the right until we sighted our notch that we planned to use to enter the "inner sanctum" of the Cathedral. We had our lunch here and enjoyed the views. Since Joel and I had climbed Cathedral Peak within the last 365 days, it was easy to leave without climbing to the top. On the way down we visited two rocks, one looked like either a turtle (or a ladybug) and then other looked like a mushroom. We then proceeded back to the saddle and down to the West Fork of Sabino Canyon. At the trail junction, we stopped so that some of our party could restock on water. They found a neat little pool up the creek that a series of very small waterfalls.

We continued on to Hutch's Pool where we set up for the night. With all the rain, the Pool was wonderously full! The other two times I've camped here we've camped away from the pool at secluded area. This time we didn't have to worry about people so we stayed close to the beach. Unfortunately, that also meant close to some trash (please people, pack out your pool floats and toilet paper!) and plethora of campfire rings that had been set up on most of the good tent spots. We decided not to have a fire since it was pretty warm, instead we had a little lantern for some light. We enjoyed our Ramen Noodles with dehydrated veggies and pork sung. It's funny how something so simple will taste pretty darn good after a day of hiking!

On Boxing day, we packed up our gear and left the quietness of the Catalinas to the craziness of the Phoneline trail. The "Resolutionaries" were already out in force attempting to work off their Christmas greed and wearing their new white sports gear they got for Christmas. I bet they hurried by us quickly since it had been a few days since we saw a shower! We got back to the cars in time for lunch.

Did this loop as a wknd backpack. Went out on the phoneline. Got my
leg muscles burned all the way ! Didnt have the energy to go up to the
peak of cathedral, was content to see it from the base, maybe next time.
Hutchs pool was too cold to swim in so went back a few weeks ago.

Wow, what an amazing loop. :GB: I've hiked it before, but that was a totally different experience with the trails being in poor maintenance back then and the summer heat since I did it in June. Being my third time on Esperero, it was much easier to follow it this time and when the trail got thin or tough to follow from Geronimo Meadow to Mormon Spring, I was able to remember where the trail went from memory. Bridalviel Falls was flowing rather nicely with snow around the pool. That Cathedral trail is still a tad tough to follow, but its better than before. Above 6000ft on the southside, small patches of snow were on the trail but when I got to the saddle and looked down the north facing side it looked like it got a good foot or so of snow. :o It was noon by then, which is too late IMHO to make a sidetrip up Cathedral not to mention the patches of snow & ice everywhere. I didn't want to go back since I did that last year after a failed attempt on Cathedral... I met a woman who's been slowly maintaining the backside of Cathedral trail up from West Fork and she said that if I made it down a quarter mile or so, I'd run into her pink tape and the trail would be in good shape after that. The trail from the saddle to her pink tape is pretty tough to follow and now there's a foot of snow covering it, so I just found a drainage relatively clear of bushes & tress and 'postholed' my way down the slope. My feet had to have been sinking in a good 6-9 inches with sometimes going in all the way to my knee, causing me to fall and I'd throw my hands out to brace myself and 'find' some sticker bush buried in the snow. ](*,) But like the lady said, once I got a quarter mile from the saddle and headed to where I remembered the trail to be I was able to find her pink tape and slowly make my way down to West Fork. Once below 6000ft, the snow patches were only 3-6 inches deep but enough to slow me down and watch my step. Once at West Fork, I filtered some water and again like the lady said that West Fork trail is now a freeway with good creek crossing points and large 3ft tall rock piles. Nothing like the route finding challenge it was before. Last time, I had an issue with finding Hutch's Pool but this time it was pretty easy to find with the water flowing pretty good. Maybe back then it was just dry or filled with sediment from the forest fires three years ago. But the map I was using has Hutch's Pool up near the confluence of West Fork and Middle Fork of Sabino and there was a moderate trail headed upstream. So not wanting to make the same mistake twice, I followed this trail and even boulder hopped a bit past more moderate to small sized pools & falls all the way up to the confluence to find no other large pool, but I did see this sweet 30ft long water slide. Following the creek was a tad tiring, so I was glad to hop back on the freeway downstream to the Sabino Canyon trail. Sabino Canyon was pretty empty this late in the day and I hit the pavement just before sunset with it getting dark about two miles from the parking lot. I was in zombie mode most of those last four miles anyways.

I didn't make it up to Cathedral Rock due to lack of time and icy/snowy conditions at the saddle so I took 2 miles and a thousand feet of AEG of the stats but that sidetrip above Hutch's Pool added another mile of boulder hopping which make it a 22 miler instead of just a straight 21 miler. I love how I can I post a triplog on HAZ and then look back 2.5 years and see that I did this loop in only 10 hours... :o :bdh: :o

I actually took a little different route to the pools. We started at the observatory on the mount lemmon trail #5. We hiked down it to the west fork trail #24 then to the pools to camp. The hike was BEAUTIFUL! It was rough on the knees though. Very steep. A couple of miles before you intersect with the west fork trail the trail is very hard to see and if not for the cairnes we would have been bushwacking the rest of the way. At one point you could see the entire Tucson valley from northwest to northeast.
The pools were awesome and a camping was great. The water was cold, but felt good on the soar paws. There were sandy beaches and privacy though there were no other people the days we camped.
When we hiked out we took west fork trail to the sycamore trail into prison camp. The trail was very well marked and was a gradual uphill which was a good change from the previous downhill. The canyons were beautiful and the entire hike was killer view after killer view.
I cannot wait to do the trip again. I am planning a March hike. I highly recommend this hike but suggest taking the sycamore trail to west fork route or come in from catalina state park on the romero trail.

Hiked down this trail on a Sabino - Cathedral - Esperero loop hike. From the juction with Cathedral Rock back down to Sabino parking lot is about 7 miles. Today was a little hot, especially in the West Fork/Cathedral park of the loop, not too bad in the canyons though. I brought 4L of water for the Sabino - Bear loop, but changed plans and ended up running out of water about 5-6 miles from the parking lot. Put to good use those cough drops I bring along in case I run out of water. This canyon just like Sabino is very scenic with occasional views of Tucson down below. The cliff walls have sweet designs and rock formations. It must be very impressive with some water flowing. When I finished this hike, I probably drank a gallon of water between the water faucets, the stash at my car, and at Subway down the road. :D Total loop ended up taking 10 hours and covered about 21 miles.
