Finally did a big loop i have wanting to do for years. Probably more than i am ready for at the moment, but the time was right nonetheless so i just did it anyway.

started at wilson mountain TH and went CCW. i had premier weather for the day and on a gorgeous thursday in sedona i saw about 10 people all day. all of the trails are in great shape with the highlights for me being wilson mountain and sterling pass, as well as dropping down brins mesa but really the whole thing is pretty awesome (except the short death defying walk up 89A between N wilson mountain and sterling pass. :o )

Delightful day and happy to finally knock this one off my list

Turned out that Elden wasn't my last hike in state. I delayed a couple of days and hiked Wilson. I went to both overlooks, but skipped the rocky summit. Lots of people out but it was still really nice. The metal locker is long gone, no more free MREs. Wilson is one of those classic Arizona hikes. A great one to hike.

Wilson Mountain was chosen for today’s hike. Bruce suggested starting from the North Wilson trail, which was a good call. We got started a little before 0800 to pleasant temps. Had a nice amount of shade and greenery for the first 1.50 miles, which climbed steeply.

Nice chance to catch our breath as we walked across the first bench, then more uphill. Once up “top”, we first headed over to the south overlook. Spent a few minutes taking pics, then headed to the north overlook. The walk between the two is mostly flat and easy. Had a snack break at the north overlook, wandered around a few minutes, then made our way back south.

Turned off the trail and headed up to the summit. Easy offtrail. Found what seemed to be the highest point, took some more pics, then headed back to the main trail. Oddly enough, while the ascent felt rocky in places, the descent felt less rocky, and easier than anticipated. We passed several hikers on our way down, but the North Wilson portion of the trail only had two.

I don’t do much Sedona hiking because I don’t like the drive, or people, but this was a fun one. Always great to hike with Kelly & Bruce.

linda set up a wilson mountain hike with bruce and i joining in
we decided to go from north wilson, which would be new to me
did the wilson mountain trail with angela ten years ago :o
we got going around 0745
up north wilson to the first bench intersection with wilson trail
another mile uphill
we went south to sedona overlook first
good use trail through pines trees to a rocky edge
great views of sedona and the surrounding red rock
retraced our steps, then off to the north overlook
not much elevation change on this part
much less deadfall to climb over than ten years ago
we took a break at the overlook
nice overview of oak creek canyon and could even see vultee arch
we did the short off trail to the true summit on the way back
easy hiking and an interesting high point with views to the east
started seeing a few more people on the way down, especially in the mile down to first bench
the return on north wilson went by quickly
nice to get the true summit and hike north wilson
this is a very scenic hike
weather was good
thanks for putting this together linda
good to see bruce again
great day :)

I got an invite to join Linda and Kelly on this hike in Sedona. It's been 5 years since I've been up here. I never realized that you can use your National Park pass in lieu of paying the Red Rock fee. Good to know.

We started up to a perfect 53 degrees. It's a steady 2.3 mile, 1600' climb to the "First Bench". We had shade most of the way up. It's another mile and 600' up to what should be called the 2nd Bench and the turn to the south overlook. Sweet 180 degree views to Sedona, the surrounding areas and down to the airport.

The mostly flat hike to the north overlook clicked off quickly. We took in the views here which I'd forgotten are actually nicer than the south overlook. After a snack break we started back and hit up the easy off trail to the high point.

We started seeing more people on the way back, but never too crazy. Always fun hiking with these two misfits. Added bonus. We taught each other new "Terms" to expand our vocabularies.

Lots of fall color below first bench, but most was yellow/brown above it. A little bit of snow from the storm earlier in the week. Excellent weather and beautiful hike as always.

Wilson Mountain Trail provides some stellar views from high vantage points, views well worth the significant (but in no way overwhelming) climb to the large mesa-like expanse at the top. With that in mind, I hiked Wilson Mountain in early March (2022), starting before sunrise at first light, from the Midgley Bridge trail head (the south route up), temperature just at freezing. At the top, I visited both the Sedona Overlook (south view) and the North Canyon end (north view), something I would recommend, i.e., taking the time and effort to visit the overlooks at both ends.

Back in 2006, a fairly extensive fire ran through large portions of where the south trail runs. That has created a contrast in the ambiance of the climb. Around the trail, the ravages of the fire have left a rather barren landscape, a bit desolate looking, with the remnants of burnt trees scattered on the ground or isolated trunks left standing, with new growth scattered somewhat discordantly and randomly. But in the distance, red rock views predominate to the south, and Oak Creek Canyon and the San Fransico Peaks loom to the North.

In terms of the hike and trail themselves, here are trail notes, brief but hopefully informative:

Ascent – Moderate, steady, switchbacks
Trail Surface – Rocks, stones, clay, sand
Navigation – Trail readily followed; few if any false spurs
Wind – on my trip, steady, strong during entire ascent. Anticipate it in winter, dress in layers, etc.
Temperature – On my winter effort, freezing all the way up, as the increasing elevation diminishes the warming sun
Trail Conditions – Ice and snow near top for my ascent for winter, a bit slippery
Descent - Above first bench, trail turns to a thick mud as the March sun melts the ice and thaws the ground by mid-morning
Views on climb – good on way up either starting from Midgley Bridge or Encinoso (north route – took that in spring)
Views at top - Also good views at top at both the north or south overlooks (as mentioned above)
Spring Conditions – North route can be overgrowth a bit and wet from rain/dew, but a bit cooler on way down
Parking – Modest parking lots at both trailheads. Midgley fills up though by mid-morning
Vegetation Note – As mentioned many portions show impact of past fire
Headlamps – In spring/summmer, for an early start in the dark to avoid noon heat, headlamps work fine for trail navigation

Left the East Valley about 5:30 a.m. and were on the trail in Sedona by 8 a.m. There are two trailheads for this hike. We started on the North Wilson Mountain TH, which begins at the Encinoso day use area and eventually connects with the Wilson Mountain Trail, after about 3 miles of hiking. The North TH is a lot more "forestry" and green, with more shade, while the Wilson TH is more open and exposed, but with more views of the surrounding red rock that characterizes Sedona.

The N. Wilson trail climbs right out of the gate, and we put up about 1000 ft of elevation in the first 1.5 miles. It was a page right out of Indian Garden to the top of the GC. That said, the climb was beautiful, with the surrounding forest and greenery. The temps were also nice and the shade was good. The humidity was a little annoying, but all good. Very few people on this part of the trail, so we enjoyed a lot of solitude.

After two miles, the trail topped out on a flat area called "First Bench," where the landscape opens up and where a fire came through about 15 years ago. Lots of meadow and wildflowers here, including a nice patch of sunflowers.

Then it was more climbing after the N. Wilson and Wilson trails merged, up to the top of the mountain, which is itself more a flat plateau, and which, upon reaching, we arrived at a fork that would allow us to head out to the south overlook (0.4 mi.) or the north overlook (1.5 mi.). Naturally, we decided to do both!

The south overlook, gives expansive views down on Sedona and surrounding area. We relaxed there and ate lunch, before retracing our steps and then heading to the north lookout. The section heading to the north lookout had been pretty scorched by the fire in 2006 and was the least scenic portion of the hike. However, the burn area did not extend all the way to the north lookout, which remains surrounded by some nice, tall pine trees and related foliage. In fact, the trees obscured some parts of the north lookout, which on first view didn't seem as impressive as the south view. But, with a little exploring, we discovered some alternate viewpoints, with awesome views and an ideal campsite right on the edge of the rim, from which I'm sure it is spectacular to watch the sunset. We made a note to come back and do this as an overnighter.

On the way down, at the junction, my wife suggested that I hike down to the Wilson trailhead while she headed back down to the car, and then she would shuttle over to pick me up. It was nice to get to experience both trails. The Wilson trail ends at the Midgley Bridge over 89A. The bridge itself is kind of cool, and it was fun to check it out.

Another great Sedona hike in the books

Decided that with highs in Phoenix being in the 90s, it might be a good excuse to head to Sedona during the summer. Had several ideas on the way up, but landed on Wilson Mountain. Started from Jordan TH because I wanted at least 15 miles.

Jim Thompson to Wilson Mountain trail went alright. On the climb up to the bench things started going off the rails, but I just chalked that up to the climb, and figured it would be better at the top. Up there, even on the flats, I could barely run, like my circulatory system was just in complete rebellion. So I hiked a bunch on the way to the north lookout, down to the south lookout, and on the way down.

Truth is, it was hot, even on top of the mountain. I think I was actually experiencing heat exhaustion.

Got back down to JT, and decided to forgo any possible side trips and just get back to the car. Found a pothole with cool water about a mile and a half from the end, and that helped a little.

Thermostat on the car read the same temperature leaving Sedona is it did when I got into Phoenix. Don't recall the last time I was this miserable out on the trails.

I decided to make my obligatory spring hike in Sedona, and chose this old favorite for the hike.

We started at Midgley Bridge, and took the Wilson Mountain Trail to the First Bench. Then we ascended up to the saddle, and went to the Sedona Overlook on the south end of the mountain. Then we went all the way across the mountain to the North Overlook. Both overlooks have great views and they are worth checking out, especially since it is a nice stroll once on the mountain. We started to go to the summit, but I decided to save that for next time when I'll do a guide to the summit for this site.

This hike will give you a decent workout and it has some great views to make the effort worthwhile.

I planned on making a day trip to Sedona, so I was up super early for a relaxing drive. I arrived before dawn and was the first one to the small Midgley Bridge TH. I knew parking is usually an issue here. Great weather expected so I paid the fee and I took right to the trail. There were very few people over the trip so that was awesome.

I always enjoy Wilson Mountain and am sure to visit both the Northern and Southern Overlooks. Not my first time here so, more looking around and enjoying and fewer pictures taken. I did make a few brief stops at the overlooks for photos. I also poked around for the summit marker. I found a large cairn but could not locate a survey marker. I didn’t pull it apart. Atop I saw deer and possibly a bear on the upper plateau/meadow. I booked it down and beat traffic out of down. Overall pretty quick for me at about 5.5 total hours car to car.

Next trip up we’ll probably be staying a few days for a more Zen Sedona experience.

We hiked the North Wilson trail to the Sedona overlook because the Midgley Bridge Parking lot was already full when we got there. The entire trail was covered in snow but we didn't need microspikes. The shaded canyons got cold but the sections in the sun were nice and warm. It was still a fun hike but was a little slippery and slushy on the descent after some of the snow had melted into mud.

Arrived at the Huckaby Trailhead (off Schnebly Hill Rd.) at about 8:30. The parking lot was almost full of cars with mostly out of state license plates. Probably has something to do with the road changing from asphalt to dirt right at the turnoff.

The original plan was Wilson Mountain Loop, but I had my dog Luna with me and it seemed pretty irresponsible to walk 89A with her for a mile. So I chose to approach Wilson Mountain from a trailhead that would offer similar distance and elevation gain, but without the loop.

Huckaby Trail is urban in its general inclination and environs with cascading views of Sedona condos and apartment buildings with the famous red rock geological formations in the background. It is only when the trail dives into the canyon do things perk up when the trail meets Oak Creek. Crossing Oak Creek and climbing up to Midgley Bridge was fun as the creek was running really hard at the narrowest spot I could find to cross.

Once up on Wilson Mountain Trail which takes off close to the latrine at the Midgley Bridge Trailhead the views were more sublime, but the highway noise was evident for the first mile and a half.

I didn't find Wilson Mountain Trail to be very strenuous. It is a well built path that gets enough traffic to be easy to follow and clear of brush and deadfall. The mountain does look pretty high up along the way, but nothing ever felt very steep or rugged.

Once up at the top I visited both overlook sites. The North Canyon Overlook was a little more interesting, but both overlooks were really beautiful and definitely the highlight of the day. Interestingly, the cell service is pretty fantastic at the top. I received a call from a client and ended up talking for about a half hour at the Sedona Overlook.

I saw probably 20 people all day except at and around the trailheads. I guess that is pretty good for Sedona standards. Nothing felt crowded, but virtually every person I passed masked up as they saw me coming. Its like everyone read the same article in the New York Times that this is what you do when you hike :?

Sedona as a town is basically a clogged artery and the hiking is somewhat interesting, but is really not up my alley. Nonetheless with this trip all I need is a visit to the Grand Canyon at some point in 2021 to maintain my Arizona residency requirements and to remain in the good graces of my 20 or so Instagram followers.

I checked the calendar and discovered that I hadn't hiked in almost 7 weeks! 🤯 Work and other obligations kept me away from the mountains and canyons. And we had Rim-to-Rim coming up the following week! We decided to do something moderate with beautiful views, and Wilson Mountain was the perfect choice. I've done Wilson Mountain multiple times, but never from the North Trailhead, so we started from there.

We began at 10am. Temperatures were in the low 80s at the start, which was perfect. It warmed up to the 90s during the ascent, but the trail was well shaded most of the way. A lot more green than expected, with beautiful views of Oak Creek Canyon. We only encountered 3 other groups of people on the ascent. At the top there was a pleasant breeze. The views from the north overlook were incredible as always, except that Humphreys Peak was diminished by smoke or haze in the distance. The views from the Sedona overlook were outstanding as always. We spent over 30 minutes at each overlook taking in the views.

The descent was unremarkable, except that I slid on the loose rocks about 30 times, and actually fell twice. We encountered one couple and a dog on the way down.

Wilson mountain will always be a favorite. The views are amazing, and every time I've gone, there have been few or no people on the trail, despite the parking lot and road being packed. It was an enjoyable day, and we had time to eat afterwards, followed by a trip to the Edge of the World for the evening.

I guess we're ready for our first Rim-to-Rim next week! 😀

I decided to head up to Sedona today and do one of my favorite Red Rock Country hikes -- Wilson Mountain.

I inexplicably forgot my GPS so I used Route Scout on my tablet computer to track the hike.

It was a bit cool at the start of the hike, but it warmed up quickly.

This hike is a good blend of awesome scenery along with a good workout. I enjoy traversing across the top of the mountain. We went off trail a bit to get to the Wilson Mountain summit, which is not far off of the trail.

I saw a tarantula, but that was it for wildlife on the hike.
