We'd had this one on our list for a while and wanted to fit it in before the bald eagle closures start on December 1. We started from the Blue Point Trailhead at the north gate to Bulldog Canyon, and we had our first wildlife sighting on the drive to the trailhead as a coyote ran alongside the highway. The temperature was in the upper 30s when we set out on the OHV roads, and our goal for the day was to visit the three named arches in the area (Delicate, Precarious, and Sunrise).

We started out generally following @adilling's route from ~ five years ago that forms a counter-clockwise loop with a few spurs out to some overlooks. We were fairly warned--his triplog said, "If you ever follow my gps for this hike, you will be cursing me, as I took a torturous route to get to the Gateway Canyon trail." I was mostly cursing myself for not picking a better route for the early part of the hike :). Once we left the roads, we had a very slow mile covering loose, steep hillsides, with a lot of ups and downs across small but steep drainages. The highlight of that mile was surprising and scattering a group of 5+ javelinas in one of those drainages.

We made our way up a steep, crumbly embankment to leave another creek bed, and while I waited at the top, I stepped toward some low brush and heard a rattle. I'd been standing there for a few minutes without realizing there was a well-camouflaged rattlesnake coiled in the brush, and that final step was close enough to earn a warning rattle...quite the day for wildlife.

We finally connected with the well-cairned trail that led us through Gateway Canyon up to the saddle. It's a beautiful area full of caves and recessions in the cliffs. We considered taking a detour up to Peak 3097 but decided against it, not knowing what the terrain was like on the remainder of the loop, so we continued to Delicate Arch, a long, thin arch that looks like it's barely hanging on.

From there, we continued toward Precarious Arch, and I detoured over to an overlook for some views of Saguaro Lake and the Salt River before we reached the second arch. That was another small but nice one, formed by a boulder lodged (precariously) between two other rocks. Then we headed northeast, and I went up to the Bulldog Cliffs High Point--more great views, and there was a summit register at the top, placed in 2021, with the most recent entry from earlier this month.

[ youtube video ]

Next up was the descent down the chute toward Sunrise Arch. The top was straightforward and not too steep, but it got more exciting farther down. I briefly thought we'd cliffed out at one point, but we moved over to the east wall of the canyon and found a safe route down. It looked a little intimidating from above, but the drops were manageable, and the rock was solid, unlike so much of the crumbly stuff we'd been on most of the day.

[ youtube video ]

I hadn't looked at pictures of Sunrise Arch in advance, and I was pleasantly surprised at how large it is. It's big enough to walk out on top, and we enjoyed the views from above and below...that whole part of the canyon around the chute and the arch is very nice.

[ youtube video ]

We hiked down through the arch, following a bunch of informal cairned trails until we were near the river again and followed that west. A Maricopa County Sheriff helicopter with an officer's legs hanging out the side circled overhead a few times. Not sure if that was a rescue operation, a search for an escaped convict, or just a training flight...

Overall, it was a nice day in a new part of the Goldfields for us...a few nice wildlife sightings, great scenery, and perfect weather. I didn't see anyone all day, though TboneKathy saw two people going up to the Bulldog Cliffs High Point while I was coming down...not sure how I passed without seeing them. I was happy the timing worked to fit this in before the closure, and it's an area I'd gladly visit again. Next time I'll take a more efficient route over to Gateway Canyon and use the extra time to check out Peak 3097 :).

Starts off following dirt roads, then no clear path following the Salt River flood plain. Heading up Gateway Canyon there is a faint trail with occasional cairns.

Couldn't find either of the arches on the top... May be they aren't there anymore?

My ex agreed to take the dogs for a few days which allows me to do a hike like this. The first section along the river would be ok for Luna, but Wrigley (10 year old Dachshund) is retired from hiking for good.

Got to the trailhead at around 4:30 and parked at the gate to the OHV area. There were a few people around including one guy who was stuck behind the gate with his jeep. He didn't have the code and was kind of frantic. Past the trailhead area I didn't see anyone all day.

I started down the jeep trail and made a few detours to look at the river. Altogether, this was fine for my first trip. but next time I come down here I will drive my truck as close as I can get to the Goldfields.

Once in the canyon things get progressively interesting. Sunset was at a little after 6:30 this evening and my thought was to turn around at 6. This was hard to do. Every bend in the canyon opens up a new vista. As much as the views are amazing, the rock, vegetation, and wildlife all make this canyon extra special.

I kept the promise to myself and got to walk down the canyon as the light of dusk changed the colors of the sky and walls of the surrounding mountains. As I was coming out of Rhyodacite I began to see a number of Javelinas. I saw more today than I have seen collectively in all my time in Arizona. One or two stared me down for a minute before scurrying off.

I will admit that the remaining walk on the jeep road was pretty boring. For the final couple of miles I pulled out the headlamp, mostly to keep from tripping over the annoying stones.

Rhyodacite Canyon is a stunner. The Goldfields are a treasure that without HAZ and some of its intrepid explorers it would have taken me a lot longer to find these mountains. Many thanks to those who have blazed these paths before me. I look forward to going deeper into this wild, beautiful area.

I enjoy this hike, and since Sunrise Arch/Bulldog Cliffs High Point/Gateway Canyon are in the closure area for Bald Eagle Nesting that runs for 7 months starting on December 1, I figured that today was my chance for a while to do this hike. This is not a hike to do in the summertime, so it is effectively a 10-11 month closure.

We started ended the hike at the Blue Point gate for the Bulldog Canyon OHV area, on Bush Highway about 1/4 mile from the bridge over the Salt River. I have a pass to enter the area, but there was no need to do so for his hike. We walked more or less parallel to the river for about 3 miles, and then climbed up to Sunrise Arch. This is a cool arch, and it has great views of Saguaro Lake and Stewart Mountain Dam. We then headed east up through a chute to get up to the Goldfields High Country. The chute was a class 3 climb, but there was no exposure and it was a lot of fun.

We then went north to the Bulldog Cliffs High Point, and stopped for a bit for a snack and to enjoy the great views. Then we went south to Peak 3097 and stopped to see Precarious Arch and Delicate Arch along the way. It was a nice off-trail excursion, notwithstanding all the fox grass. I think that I need to get some gaiters!

The views on Peak 3097 are some of the best in the northern Goldfields, so this is a worthy peak to ascend. After hanging out there a bit, we made our way to Gateway Canyon and took a good use trail down to the Salt River Bottom Land, and back to our cars.

It was a fun day out in the rugged, seductive, and underrated Goldfields!

I decided to head out to this area and do a hike, which is under a Bald Eagle Nest closure beginning on December 1.

We started and ended the hike at the North Bulldog Canyon Gate at Blue Point, on Bush Highway. The gate was open when I got there, and this time I closed it, even though I did not drive through it.

We walked about 3 miles near the Salt River until we got below Sunrise Arch. There was some fog on the river early in the morning, and there was a good bit of snow on Four Peaks, Mount Ord, and Mazzy Peak.

We got on Sunrise Arch, and headed up to the Goldfield High Country via a chute east of the Arch -- it was fun going up through the chute. Once at the High Country, we took a walk over to the Bulldog Cliffs High Point -- there are some really nice views there.

Then we made our way over to Precarious Arch and Delicate Arch, which I had been to a few times. I had intended to go to Peak 3097, but one of the people with me ran over a bolt just before pulling into the parking lot, and his tire was as flat as a pancake. So I did not want to be out there too long, so instead of going to Peak 3097, we descended Gateway Canyon and made our way back to the TH.

It was another nice day in the Goldfields!

Forgot to charge the phone so no electronics, GPS or camera, on this hike. The Gateway Canyon use trail is in pretty good shape considering. The goal for the day was to just do some exploring so once we topped off we just headed south across a ridgeline, spooking up two herds of javelina, then went east down a canyon where we were stopped at a couple large dropoffs. On the way back trough the river bank maze we practiced the skill of tracking, keeping on the same route we used on the hike in, following our own footprints. Lots of foxtail while hiking off trail but this was a really fun hike.

Mileage and AEG are guesstimates.

While I'd already reached my goal of 900 miles (goal was 1,100 but two surgeries put the damper on that), Tracey just needed 7 miles to reach 550 miles for 2018 but didn't feel like making for a long day so we wanted something close which would provide the mileage.

We narrowed it down to either Gateway Canyon or Rhyodacite Canyon. Both would provide the miles but we were both shooting for another 1,000+ AEG so Gateway it would be. Also, it was almost three years since we hiked up Gateway.

While we began at the Bulldog gate but avoided the 'lowlands' of the official route, choosing a more direct route with significantly more climbing, but what-the-heck it's just additional AEG. The ups & downs provided a thorough workout early on, enough so with the initial 98% humidity I was fully soaked head-to-toe in sweat, but we had high hopes for spotting deer and/or javelina which was the norm for this route. No such luck today... we saw no wildlife but for a ground squirrel and a few birds.

The weather seemed to be playing with us, first with sun filtering through the clouds at the start, thoroughly clouding up, clouds thinning to 90% sun, dark rain clouds filling the sky as we reached to top, and a medley of skies along the return leg.

In hindsight, Rhyodacite Canyon may have been the better choice... in the three years since we last hiked Gateway I either forgot about the steep bare-rock areas or it has gotten much worse. Between the effort and the constant mental strain of the thought "two back surgeries is more than enough, I absolutely CANNOT fall!" with every step I took, I doubt I'll do this hike again. While slow-but-sure was ok on the ascent, the descent brought loud & constant complaints from the hips & knees.
: rambo :
But no matter, once we reached less treacherous ground all the trials and travails were out-of-mind and we were enjoying a bit of sun again. Overall it was a poor day for photos, I pretty much carried the camera along for added weight... like 90% of the water in my pack.
:-k
Which brings to mind, adding all the water I returned with after hikes, I've probably given a free ride to an extra 250 lbs of water this year. But with my average hike distance dropping more than a mile since last year, dehydration never became an issue.

Nice hike up to the high country plateau.
Went over to see Delicate Arch, Precarious Arch and the high viewpoint for Saguaro Lake and Dam.
Recommend long pants and long sleeves as the bush and thorns are encroaching the route.

Surprisingly there was another group of three in the high plateau area.

I have been thinking about doing this hike for a while. I could not convince any of my hiking buds to come along, so I opted for a solo adventure in the Goldfields.

This hike was awesome! Looking at other triplogs, everyone seemed to start up near Sunrise Arch and then work their way over to Gateway Canyon. I decided to do it in reverse and make my way up to the top via Gateway Canyon.

The water level is still high, so I parked at the Phon D Sutton/Blue Point T/H and started walking towards the cliffs. I have done the Sunrise Arch hike from there before, so I know it's about 3 miles along the river before you "hang a right" and start going up. I thought I would look for a "short cut", so I stayed higher up along the path. If you ever follow my gps for this hike, you will be cursing me, as I took a torturous route to get to the Gateway Canyon trail.

Once on the actual trail, it is easy to follow and well cairned. This hike was very fun. Not too steep and quite scenic. Once up top, I moved to the left and started looking for target #1 - the Delicate Arch. That one was easy to find, right off the saddle, near the top. It was so cool to finally get up to see this cool little arch. The terrain up top is a mixture of slopes and ridges. No trail up there, of course, but easy to navigate.

I worked my way over to a few of the cliffs and went out as far as I dared. The views of the river valley below were awesome. Once I got in some nice views, I started looking for target #2 - the Precarious Arch. This one was not to hard to find either. It's right behind the tallest peak on that ridge. I had to go through Downtown Chollaville to get there, but it was not too bad of a hike up. The Precarious Arch is certainly that - it looks like it's barely holding on. I could see cracks on the rocks all over. It looks like this one will succumb to gravity in the near future. Glad I got to see it.

After that, I made my way over to the tallest of the cliffs that overlooks the water users parking area. The views up there were amazing. The entire Lower Salt Valley was before me, as were great views of the cliffs and Saguaro Lake and Four Peaks!

Once all the sightseeing was done, I knew what had to be done next. The only thing between me and my final target - the Sunrise Arch, was the little old chute going down. Maybe I misread or perhaps the map looked so flat when I was planning this hike, but the steepness and rough trail down this chute caught me by surprise. This was Browns' Peak level steep. Oh well, I had no choice and I made it down. For anyone considering going up or down this one, stay towards the cliff on the left (going up) or on the right (going down). It was a steep one for sure.

Target #3 was there before me. This is the only arch out of the three that I have visited before. It is awesome, as usual. I had a little snack break and relaxed a bit in the shadows of the arch. Then, down I went to the river and towards the death march in the sand back to the trail head.

I will definitely head back up to the top of these cliffs. I will also definitely wait until the river is low enough to walk across. 10.5 miles is a good distance, but about 6 of them were along the river. No offense to the river, but it's flat and boring compared to the wonderland in the cliffs.

A lot of people are calling in sick, or even going as far as quitting their jobs, to look for baby long-nosed snakes this time year. Baby long-nosed snakes are hatched and are taken to the desert. It's disheartening that the news media has ignored this phenomenon, so I have to make up for it and get post some photos.

Last night I found 4 babies long-nosed snakes (newborns and yearlings), along with 2 night snakes. I focused my attack on snakes this time and ignored all toads. I went to the same area as yesterday because I did so well yesterday; although, I hike further from the river in a different area. No rattlesnakes this time.

These humid days and long hours at work have forced me to hike at night. I'm also going to the Philippines in October, so getting used to being up all night and sleeping during the day would make sense in helping me get used to the jetlag.

Near the start of the hike, a chorus of spadefoots greeted me and called me over to do a short photo shoot. I was happy to oblige, :D but my focus was on finding baby long-nosed snakes as they are NOW out and crawling about looking for their first newborn photos to be featured on HAZ and other social media.

I found one baby long-nosed snake within 10 minutes. It wasn't too happy about getting its picture taken, which is common for baby long-nosed snakes and baby humans alike. I kept trunkin' and saw a few more toads that got in my way and found another baby long-nosed snake.

Then I found a diamondback in the bushes. I tried to feed the snake some mice (there were a lot of rodents scattered around) by catching them and tossed them at the snake, but this snake was being lazy and unresponsive, so after the snake passed on rodent #3, I decided to return to the car. On the return, I saw another diamondback, which is a nice way to end the hike.

Started out to do a little Re-Con for a up coming hike that we've been eying for a couple of years. Which was the Trans Goldfield. Official Description very vague, and AZLOT69's triplog was only thing to go by. Got up to the top of Rhyodacite Canyon, stopped for a snack. I will say someone has trimmed and cairned this route, was so much nicer then 3 years ago. Thank you very much :) This is a beautiful Canyon and if you haven't been there, I would highly recommend this as go to hike. Lot of water running today :D :D Roger says we're this far, why don't we just head over to Route 88 :scared: :scared: :o :o All we had to do was get to the top of Goldfield Figure 8, and cruise down to the TH. ( Rog's famous last words ) we thought the top of the 8 was maybe 2 miles at the most. Called Iris -- Cel phone service :o :y: Changed our plans. Asked her to meet us at the Willow Springs TH at 5 to 5:30 at the latest. The route we wanted turned out not to be 2 miles but 4 miles of -- To quote AZLOT69 triplog --- "This will test your endurance and route finding skills" ---- : rambo : style. Amen !!! No Cel service, we had no actual route to follow, Now no way to contact anyone  new ETA 7 PM and Iris is waiting   :scared: Glad she is  very understanding. We had to go up thru a couple of saddles to check out the route from a higher view point, last saddle we went up got cliffed out , but looked below and found a ramp that took us back down to the wash. Be prepared for heavy brush and catclaw during your many crossings of the wash. This center 4 miles or so is the path of least resistance !!! You are in the sun most of the day, so plenty of water, rest and anything over 85 degrees I would think twice before attempting. Over all this was a great hike with views of the inner Goldfields seldom seen.

Last year we hiked up Gateway Canyon and went left, yesterday we went right. New terrain so we spent some time route finding but we both really enjoyed this area and saw more than enough to justify a trip back. Other than a trio of hunters we ran into along the river we saw no others.

Our second annual Pre-Thanksgiving Goldfield Mountains hike. We both really enjoyed this hike as it has a lot to offer. Once we reached the "Hi Country" we set off to check out Delicate Arch, Precarious Arch, and then Sky Island. The views from Sky Island where drop the hiking stick stunning. As we were taking in the views and refueling, the gears in my head were spinning as I was thinking up new hike ideas around the surrounding area. Great day out on the trail.

Happy Thanksgiving to all HAZ members!

Aside from Pass Mountain, I haven't hiked in the Goldfields. The route taken by Johnr1 and Tibber looked like a good introductory hike so I gave it a go. The route description is spot on.

After yesterday's Flatiron hike, I was glad to have a few miles of flat terrain before ascending to the high country via Gateway Cyn. The mesquite forecast near the Salt River was interesting, as was my first experience getting so close to the Salt River. I didn't realize there was so much water flowing through here.

The highlight of this route, though, was the hike up Gateway Canyon and the views up top. The Elephant Arch with the Salt River and Red Mountain in the background was very cool. From the elephant arch, I continued up the hill to a saddle, then made a short loop above the eastern side of the plateau before heading back down.

Very nice hike. The views from up top were awesome.

We drove the power wagon to Dome Mountain TH, then FR 10 to FR 1356 to Hat top hill, where we parked and began our hike to Westward arch. Walked past the south side of Golden Dome and across a western saddle to Westward arch. Then back up to a saddle on the northwest side of Golden Dome, circling Golden Dome and working our way to Pedestal Arch. Now, the return to the 'power wagon' and home.

Thursday morning we drove into the Goldfields at Blue Point trail head. A few miles in, we left our truck and walked the road another half mile and walked into a canyon that we had seen cairned on a previous visit. The cairns failed to lead us anywhere, but we saw a slot we thought might get us to the top, so moved toward it. Wild horsed were spotted ahead and they seemed curious about us. We got within a couple hundred yards from them before they decided to move from the area. The slot was too steep for us so we moved around the base of the vertical rocks to the south until we found another area to traverse. We came out at the point north of Dome Mountain where the camoflaged tanks are located. We moved above the tanks to a saddle that would take us to the ridge that leads to Panorama peak. After taking in the Peak views, we moved to the northwest to find the slot that would drop us to the area where our truck was parked. A fun and sometimes challenging hike that all seven hikers enjoyed.

We drove to Water Users Parking area, crossed the river and hiked up to Sunrise Arch. The went through the slot east of the arch up to Sky Island and on to Precarious Arch and Delicate Arch, then down Gateway Canyon trail and back to the river. Fun hike on a wet day. No rain, but wet foliage and wet rocks.

We hiked a loop after driving up Packsaddle Road as far as we thought safe with the truck, then began our hike walking the Willow Springs Wash. We cut over to the west to find Pedestal Arch first, then to camouflaged tanks and Triple Arch before leaving via Black Glass Canyon. Turned out to be a difficult way out after a good hike in. We did find some new horse trails that made the initial portion of the hike more pleasant. My grandsons from California loved the hike and climbing those great yellow boulders. The Gila Monster was an added surprise. All the wash walking and no rattlesnakes were seen.

We saw some Mexican poppies, crown mallow and goldfields. The brittle bush seemed to have run there course and few had any flowers.

Started from the bulldog canyon turnoff on the Bush Hwy. I ran into 6 horses on the way back down. Pictures are in the linked photo set,.

Trail Conditions
Up until about 1/4 mile before the turn off for gateway canyon it is mostly easy to follow a trail of some type (just keep working closer/along the river), then you just sort of walk along and start looking for a turn off trail.
After turn off for about 1/4 mile, it can be a little confusing again as to which way to go. Once you pick up the trail again, it is mostly easy going to the top.
Very little overgrowth on the trail overall, especially if you stay on them.
