Started from the main trailhead and did a lasso loop on the Malpais Trail. Lot of traffic early on with people trying to get done before the heat kicks in. Mostly bikers, but also a lot of hikers and trailrunners. Pretty humid, looked like there were monsoon storms not too far away at first. By the end I was pretty soaked. Empty parking lot when I got back.

It cost a total of $17 to obtain 100% Progress of the San Tan Mtn Reg Park - Trails
My synopsis is they aren't worth much more than that. It's also lame that climbing isn't allowed at Owl's Head anymore.

Headed out shortly after noon and really lucked out, with a nearby stormcloud blocking most of the sun during the outing. First 5 miles was textbook, took San Tan all the way down to Malpais south start, clocked a steady 12' pace and played leapfrog with a biker. Hit the wall while climbing out of the wash, later found out that my heart was between 170-180 for that first hour with the darn heat & humidity combo. Struggle bus from this point on, alternated between walking and running to the end, leg cramps were visibly twitching :sk: Was able to (very slowly) jog from the top of Hedgehog to the parking lot, just in time to drive to kid's school and 30s after they were released.

Trails were in great shape, as usual, no visible washout damage or anything.

I had used my only $5 bill to tip the waitress at the Queen Creek Denny’s where I had breakfast. Then I stuck my spare singles in the VFW donation jar. When I arrived at Rock Peak Wash Trailhead, all I had left was a twenty, and I sure as hell was not going to over-pay the $7 fee. But I would pay, because I’m a good boy. 😇

So, I put $7 of car console change into the parking envelope. But the envelope was too fat for the slot. I reopened the envelope, fed half the coins directly into the slot, dropped the still open envelope in, and was on my way by 8:35 a.m.

I hiked San Tan Mountain Regional Park two months later than in 2020 [ photoset ] , and it paid off in flowers. Not a lot, by any means, but a least some, which keeps my hike videos from being an endless series of trail shots. The first flowers I saw, along Rock Peak Wash Trail, were scorpion weed, which are among Phoenix’s most common flowers, along with brittlebush and creosote.

In 1½ miles on San Tan Trail, on a Wednesday morning, I counted 1 dog walker, 23 hikers and 8 mountain bikers. Busy!

On the Hdgehog Trail saddle, I took a break to swap water. A horse rider rode by. He didn’t seem to be completely in control of his mare, riding it close to the bench. I was leary of getting kicked when he turned around right in front of me. 🥺

At the west end of Hedgehog Trail, there is a bike repair stop. I turned north on San Tan Trail (again) for a ¼ mile, before turning west onto Malpais Trail.

There's no benches anywhere on Malpais Trail. It’s the most hikey hiking in the park. From he first saddle, Malpais Trail descends to a sandy wash at the foot of the two buttes [ photo ] . I passed three friendly horse riders, in much better control of their steeds, admiring the view.

Malpais Trail turns east, still in the sandy wash for another ¾ mile. I got briefly diverted into a side wash. The trail then makes a short climb to the second saddle, with nice views east, along the Malpais Hills, towards Rock Peak.

Malpais Trail turns east, still in the sandy wash for another ¾ mile. I got briefly diverted into a side wash. The trail then makes a short climb to the second saddle, with nice views east, along the Malpais Hills, towards Rock Peak. It was getting pretty toasty — the temp was 85℉ an hour later at the trailhead — so the bit of shade came in handy while I ate lunch and rehydrated with my hiking beer. 🥪 🍺

Malpais Trail then descends to a third stretch on San Tan Trail. There is a crested saguaro — maybe two — on the north side of San Tan Trail, though I forgot to look for it. After a ½ mile on Malpais Trail, I turned right back onto Rock Peak Wash Trail for the final stretch. Along the way, I passed a guy pushing his MTB through the deep sand, wondering how much further he had to go. 😆

Some decent patches of scorpionweed. Scattered tiny lupine. Few ocotillo with old dark flowers. Creosote starting to wilt. One small patch each of Mexican gold poppy & desert marigold. Some brittlebush. A couple of other species.

Lesser known/used trailhead, magnificent crested, varying terrain from sandy wash to well defined trail, some rocky mixed in… and the Malpais loop has an oasis type feel a couple days to a week after a decent rain. Due to low AEG, this is a great little roller stroller in a less populated portion of the San Tans.

Bike -> Jog -> Bike. Today I wanted to start from the southern Rock Peak TH and check out the Malpais loop, which would "finish" all the trails in the park for me, didn't estimate the increased bike distance from home or trail mileage lol. Bike was tough, took Gary & Judd, felt like it was steady uphill the whole way. Rock Peak Wash is 95% loose sandy wash, which was "fun" to jog in. Turned on San Tan Trail to the southern end of Malpais, then followed that trail clockwise. I liked Malpais, good mix of sandy wash and packed trails, was able to keep moving with only a few walking breaks through sand. Shaded wash felt good, this will be a haven during the warmer months. Was passed by two runners along this section. Took San Tan back down to Rock Peak to close out the loop, lots of bike traffic along San Tan, at least 15 within a mile. Rock Peak Wash trail and trailhead were empty on the way out. Took Brenner Pass back home, wasn't as steep as I feared, made for a nice change of views. Was surprised at the distances covered when I got home, didn't feel like that much.

Bike from home -> park: 7.8 miles, 37 mins
Trail running: 7.8 miles, 1:35 hrs
Bike from park -> home: 6.9 miles, 28 mins
Calories: 1611

Put together Rock Peak Wash Trail, Malpais Trail, and parts of San Tan Trail for a 8.1 mile loop starting at the Rock Peak trailhead.

Night Hike! - The Constellations
Arrived at about 1am and started hike. Decided to use the Canon EF 28-300mm instead of the Rokinon fish eye lens. The Rokion is a fast lens at about f2. Comparing this night hike photos with last one, you can see the difference. the Rokion lens is fixed focal length, while the canon can go from 28-300mm for a good zoom. Noticed the canon seems to work pretty well for representing what you typically will see in the night sky, but doesn't capture the scenery very well. A number of constellations were place well in relation to the landscape, so I decide to focus on them.

Moon didn't rise till just before dawn, so this was a darker hike than my typical night hikes that I generally do around the full moon.

Didn't see a single person the whole hike, but that shouldn't be to suppressing :)

Pretty sure I spotted an Arizona Grey fox just before getting to the Trailhead parking. Not much bigger than a large cat with a tail just about as long as the rest of it's body.

Headed out on a short leg of Goldmine Trail to begin our lasso loop. The small crowd of big-booty hikers included Olympic stretched spandex. 0.2 miles in we took a right on Dynamite Trail and parted ways with the herd.

O.2 to 1.7 mi we traded the lead with a friendly mountain biker duo that took several breather-breaks. Easy-grade mountain biking in my opinion but I think they were in the sprout-a-lung stage.

At 1.7 mi we crested the highpoint of Dynamite Trail. Perhaps a nice out-n-back for a shorter hike. A sharp left begins descending and parts way with the urban feel.

2.65 mi - reached the desert floor. Turned right for 2.25 miles through the western heart of the odd-layout San Tan Trail. Not the most appealing pre-hike stretch in mapping. That said, the hike was increasingly getting my attention. Notably Malapais Hills. Unexpected Superstition-esque wham-bam pizzaz Geronimo-Malapais(by chance) look vs hills from our angle.

4.9 mi - turned right onto Malapais Trail. The anticipated leg of the hike for myself. My attention-rise was fading slowly in the wash like the sand through time.

8.0 mi the_eagle_god granted a pre-twelve-mile break! Hopped outta the wash for views. Kinna ho-hum kicking off the break. Cheetos, a @Ladyeagle brownie(thx!), and a cloud increased enthusiasm.

8.25 mi - what I was dreading to be a never-ending wash crested to a flipside wash. Puffy cloud explosion was underway and the choir was hitting a few of the high notes. Albeit far far away, we were rooting-on the tibbernator to net a few clouds in her KofA Kabana Workshop. However, that may have been a yesterday event in hindsight.

9.2 mi - back on the odd U shaped San Tan Trail. We crossed paths with more hikers/bikers along the next 3 miles to the main East entrance. Restrooms are a notch below Tom's Thumb or new Phx Parks class but not bad. Bruce insisted we honor lord Denny with a trip through the turtle?tortoise habit. Nicely done, albeit seemingly an unlikely perennial cascading water habit in the greater Sonoran Desert.

12.85 mi - totally unexpected second break before ticking off another ten miles. Shriveled up and black but proved he has a heart!

Pleasant and unexpected change of terrain continuing too. The bulk of the hike until now was anybody could bike if desired. Passed one of those "extreme blah blah trail" ahead signs. Yeah right. I've read the little Peoria-park signs that cried wolf to various overkill degrees. It's a good thing we've been on a few hikes and a damn good thing we didn't escort grandma out onto the 40° grade. Culture shock from the rest of the park but a cool twist! The footing is semi sketchy on the north grade.

◇◇ The gist of the range in review since it was previously a mystery for myself ◇◇
Santan Mountain - NW. Signature blop of a mountain. Out of the park.
Goldmine Mountain - NNE. Linear split ridge. Imagine hiked most based on access and lack of entrance gate.
Malapais Hills - South. Multi ridged eye candy. No access. Gasp.
Valley - Center. Majority of trails. Better than anticipated 360° views.

Parking - Overflowing. Fee to be legal is cash envelope. Electric tender would seemingly net more use.
Activity - Diversified cultures and skill levels, hikers and mountain bikers alike.
Signage - better than average. Every turn and the potential wrong-turn in the washes have carsonite signage.
Flora - better than anticipated desert varieties. A step up from White Tanks which I figure resemble how SoMo once looked before the human-kind invasion.
Fauna - one bunny, occasional bird calls throughout.

Expected a low 3 of 5-star hike overall. Moments of high-4 will net at least one return. Perhaps shoved aside due to two less than stellar Usery hikes eons ago. A dandy 80 photo urban-fringe hike on this day.

I had never hiked in San Tan Regional park before, so it was time to try it out.

A 7:30 start netted us a parking spot in the about 30 car lot. Later, on the return, cars were parked all up and down the road into the park.

Cool temps to start and easy trails and grades. CCW on the Dynamite Trail and then the San Tan Trail, the people thinned out considerably. We passed the occasional Hiker, runner, MTB'er

The Malpais (def. "badland") Trail was my favorite of the day. Up close views of Malpais Hills, perfect temps, long clear views and white puffy Fraley's made it even more enjoyable.

Back on the San Tan we made a stop at the parks east main entrance. It appeared Denny had broken out of his enclosure and was nowhere to be found. The trails all day had been in good shape, wide, and gentle grades. The final furlong to the TH included the steepest climb of the day on the Goldmine Trail. It got 'cha puffin', The decent down the west side was steeper and looser.

Nice to sample this area. I would probably so it more often if I lived in the south valley.

Another gorgeous weather day for May so decided on a local hike. Changed up my routine of Goldmine and Dynamite trails with a loop between them and started instead at the park office. Windy and 58° at the start, parking lot was not very busy noticed a couple of horses being saddled. Headed up San Tan trail and then turned down Rock Peak wash trail , appears to be mostly a horse route from Brenner Pass road, , did not go all the way to the trailhead before turning back to San Tan. Was off track in the rock peak area, does not appear too many others get lost up there. Continued on for first time on Malpais trail bumped rating up from a 1 to a 2 due to no bikes on it, 4.1 miles and 75% a wash, nice view looking up at the malpais hills but hiking felt like snow shoeing , can fill your shoes with sand and can burn up some calories on that one. Clouds started to gather to the north , time to head back, Returned via Moonlight, Stargazer trails and then a mini loop to visit the well done Arizona Memorial for those who lost their lives in the Middle East since 9/11. Went by the buddy pond and windmill and then little leaf trail to finish up an enjoyable day. Caution on these trails in hot weather as there is no water , except at the park office, and very little shade.

First observation 100 yards from Rock Peak TH (fee area - $7) was the deep sandy washed that would be a majority of the Rock Peak > San Tan > Malpais lasso loop - hiking is gonna be a little extra work today.
Made decent time through the wash noticing Rock Peak seemed totally doable and intriguing. Just past ST/RPW near a bench is a cool crested saguaro worth a quick break to admire. Next stop was the 2nd junction w/Malpais trail so I could loop back to closer RPW on ST. Seemed like 80% of Malpais was straight wash, especially on the second half closet to Malpais Hills which loom over the trail the entire hike along with great views of Rock Peak and Goldmine Mountain to the N.
Overall, Trail was super easy to follow with minimal AEG. I will say though... if you don’t like sandy washes, I wouldn’t recommend this hike.

San Tan-Hedgehog- Malpais- San Tan- Hedgehog- San Tan I’m usually good for two hours in the summer am. With the overcast I figured three would be good. Lightning on the other mountains made the San Tans my choice. Nice morning hike. Enjoyed Malpais more this time over last. Pretty green out and enjoy the washes . Lot of lizards and birds out. One dead fox ☹️. I had Malpais all to myself and only saw 4 mountain bikers and 4 hikers on the other trails. Good Morning on trail.

Early morning run in the SanTan. This is a long drive for me so I don't get out here much but when I do it's been a nice visit. Today was no exception. Got on the trail just after 5am. I wanted to hit the Malapais Trail so I put together a loop going CW starting with the San Tan Trail - HedgeHog - south on the San Tan - Malapais - north on the San Tan - and then Moonlight Trail back to the TH. All the trails were nice. Both the San Tan and Hedgehog were ideal jogging trails - compact dirt with mild elevation change. The Malapais Trail was more wash than I anticipated but in its own way still very nice. It gets you up close to the Malapais Hills, so you get some nice views of them. The Malapais wash is the dry, beach sand kind of wash so it is definitely more challenging to try to run in. On the plus side, the wash is more cooler in the early morning so it felt pretty nice while I was in there. The only times I wasn't dealing with the sand was when I was climbing hills and at the end of the Malapais. It's funny. Each time I climbed a hill I thought I was getting out of the wash/sand only to descend back into it on the other side. The hill climbs were all pretty minor, though the first was a more up and over, whereas the other two were more gradual and winding. The Moonlight Trail was the most "blah" of the trails, but it did get me back to the TH quickly. Trails were busier than I anticipated. Passed about 20 hikers/runners and 3 bikers (but no one on the Malapais). Wildlife was minimal again. A few rabbits and that was it.

My original plan was to hike up in Cave Creek out to the 6L Ranch, but with the heat, I decided to opt for a hike that was a little shorter, a little easier, and closer to home so I could get an earlier start. I hiked the Malpais Trail once before 8 years ago, but I hadn't kept the track on my GPS, so this was also to do that.

I started from the Rock Peak Wash TH, and took the Rock Peak Wash Trail up to the Santan Trail. From there, I did a figure-8, going first counter-clockwise along the Malpais Trail, then clockwise along the Santan and Hedgehog Trails, ending back on the Rock Peak Wash Trail to the TH.

I saw only 2 other hikers the whole time, very early on. Saw quite a few bikers, as usual for a county park. The temperature really wasn't too bad. There were breezes the whole time, and there were enough clouds that it gave intermittent shade. Not seeing many people made it very peaceful along this remote area.

this hike gives me a total for this year so far that already exceeds my entire total for 2014, so getting back at it a bit more now. :y:

I've never hiked in the park before and opted for the Rock Peak TH to avoid any crowds on this perfect day. Success! 3 cars! :y:

The Rock Peak and Malpais trails seem to be afterthoughts and generally follow sandy washes that are not pleasant. The other trails are the exact opposite. Perfect for trail running, mountain biking, or putting! I think they rake them daily!

Tons of saguaro down here and great views all around. Malpais is a scenic trail. This park would be 10x better if they built some trails that ascend some of the peaks. As it is they seem to try to avoid elevation gain whenever possible.

For some reason I put effort into getting back to watch some sportsing thing on TV. Reconsidering that decision now. ](*,)

Did the biggest loop the park offers:

San Tan south to Malpais near Rock Peak
Malpais loop back to San Tan
San Tan north to Dynamite
Dynamite north to Goldmine
Goldmine north to trailhead, then south to Littleleaf with a break at the graves
Littleleaf to the end

Malpais Hills looks like a cool ridgeline to explore

My friend wanted a super easy hike for today, and Malpais fit that requirement. I'd call this one more of a scenic walk than a hike, but it was still enjoyable. We started from the Rock Peak Wash trailhead, and made a loop of Malpais.

Looking for some miles, thought about San Tan used to dune buggy in the area years ago and haven't been back since ( guess there is so much north and east of our home I just didn't think of it.) Got on HAZ and looked around San Tan and seen hikerdw's route and gave me just what i was looking for Except I should have started counter clockwise and got Goldmine out of the way 1st !!! I should start paying attention :o But it was a great hike, Malpais is tough on the legs, but gave me character, Coming up Goldmine after Dynamite was not what i was thinking about, but my poles and big rocks to rest on let me make it to the saddle. The rest of the hike was downhill and I could see the Flag so that uplifted my spirits, finished on Littleleaf to the trail head.
